VROC Difficulties (Long)

by BRH » Wed, 21 Nov 2001 10:01:13

I just got my cable modem today and tried setting up a direct-connect
GPL race with my nephew who also has a cable modem.  But, we ran into
problems.......When I tried to host, he couldn't connect to me, and when
he tried hosting, I couldn't connect to him.

To make matters worse, he has never been able to get a racelist in VROC
(although he does get VROC Chat).  I have no such problem.  We are using
_exactly_ the same core.ini file.  Here's the Communications section of
that core.ini file:

[ Communications ]

; Default send_every is 2.  Default send_size is 84.  See readme for
details.

net_mdm_client_send_every = 3            ; Client packet freq on dialup
net_mdm_client_send_size = 84            ; Client packet size on dialup
net_mdm_server_send_every = 3            ; Server packet freq on dialup
net_mdm_server_send_size = 132            ; Show 8 cars (6/2)
net_use_mdm_bandwidth_for_tcp_ip = 1
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1
show_meters = 1                                 ; 0 = off * 1 = on
Alt-M to toggle

Now, I have a few questions:

1.  I suspect that he has something wrong in his VROC set-up and
suggested that he re-install WinVROC.  Can anyone provide me a URL for
this, and let me know if he also needs to download/apply any
patches/fixes?
2.  This cable modem is brand new to me, so I don't know what choices
GPL is supposed to present to me when I try to host a race directly.  (I
never tried hosting before.)  When I try, the only choices I have in the
"Accept Connections from" section are my dial-up modem, and my serial
port (which my cable modem is not connected to).  However, when I use my
dial-up modem, I get TCP/IP as a choice, as well.  Shouldn't I be
getting this as a choice all the time?
3.  Is there a good site which can explain in _plain_ language, the
necessary settings to connect either through VROC or a direct
connection?

Sorry for the long post, but if anyone has the answers, it'll be RAS.

Thanks!

Thanks, Neil.

I assume you have a cable modem?  If so, what are the "connection" choices that
GPL gives you when you host a race (direct-connection)?  How about when you join
a race (direct-connection)?  Is TCP/IP one of them?

Thanks, again.

VROC Difficulties (Long)

by Ed Whit » Wed, 21 Nov 2001 12:30:21

BRH, I don't usually host, but I have, and since I have cable I went and
checked anyway, I have 3 choices with the first choice being

TCP/IP node(xxx.xx.xxx.xx.....my IP Address)

IPX (long strange string of numbers......I'm behind a router, I connect to
other computer using IPX)

Serial port( com1 384000 kbps)

I have no idea why serial port shows up, maybe by default? cause I have no
modem besides my external cable modem connected, but at any rate I'd be
hosting via my TCP/IP node

You can disable the modem (serial) and IPX by setting the following
parameters to 1:

disable_ipx = 1                          ; Disable IPX support
disable_modem = 1                        ; Don't look for/use modems

VROC Difficulties (Long)

To all that replied with suggestions -- a big thank you.  This has been a
mystery for 2 or 3 weeks now.

In terms of VROC, my nephew wound up having to uninstall VROC AND clear it
from the registry before re-installing.  After he did that, he finally got a
race list and we could connect.

And Neil, we both pasted your communications section into our core.ini's and
we both get TCP/IP as a selection (finally).

Thanks!
