Why do games like Rainbow 6 Come out for nintendo 64 and play well,no
skipping or pausing, when the N64 only has 4 megs Ram??? Umm my Machine has
128 megs Ram and still I see Hard Drive access from time to time.
Whos writing shitty code, Microsoft or the PC *** industry?

i have to say MS.

under linux ,i've do all these things in the same time

play quake3
have netscape web search running
a gcc compilation running
a xemacs running

with 64Mb, and no SWAP, i don't have a swap partition neither a swap file.

the problem with win is that it swap even if you don't need it !
And it have a too big cache file.
And fat system is a crap.

I only use win to play, and i pray every time i boot under win :o)

i hope, with  w2k and the driver certification, blue screen will be
bad memroies.

The reason that a N64 game doesn't skip or have to search is because it is
entirely on a chip. It's sort of like haveing the entire game installed onto
RAM.  Still, I doubt that I'll ever give up my pc.  There just isn't the
same caliber of games on consoles

N64 games have less resolution, texture detail... The nintendo is also
optimized to play games. The speed of the roms(cartridge) is also a lot
faster than the fastest hard drive.
Windows also takes up a lot of space.

I believe it can be done, but I haven't been able to set up a Linux
system without swap partition. I definatly believe the no swapping
thing.

Possibly with the dreamcast, and most Probably with the PS2, you will
find gameplay and options that outstrip all but the most megafied
computers.  Never say never.  It will be a tough choice....spend 600$
for a top of the line 3dfx card(and probaly a new cpu/motherboard and
memory)or $400 for a new PS2.

strange that we former Amiganauts were able to multi-task on 1/2 meg
systems...didn't need even 32megs to nicely run several programs..
Linux has a ways to go before it equals the compact os from the Amiga.

I think there most be something wrong with your setup Ronnie, I remember
seing you post about this regarding N3 as well, one of the PC's here in
the shop is a Celeron 400 with "only" 64 MB of ram, and that one will
run both N3 and R6 without pausing or HD access, it runs N3 over a V2

Methinks something is screwy in your system Ronnie, give us some info,
maybe we can help, 128 mb of RAM should be plenty

CPU, Motherboard, HD, do you have Office installed, have you put in
those lines in the system.ini file for the vcache settings etc etc, all
you can remember will be of help

Wait! It is probably just the office program FindFast searching your hard drive when you are playing. Press
Ctrl+Alt+Delete to see if its running, If it is then select it and End task. Then go to
C:\Windows\Start\Programs\Startup folder and delete the shortcut for FindFast.

hard drive ultra DMA 33, 128 megs RAM pc 100, Voodoo 3 3000 AGP, Sound
Blaster PCI 128 sound card,4 x Sony CD rom.
Nothing in background running except for Systray and Explorer!
I guess its more like dropped frames not pauses, as the games keep going
but the frames get dropped due to Hard drive access.

That's odd

There's no reason for your HD to keep accessing once you've loaded the
track/level...especially not if you're not running some other stuff in
the background

It has most likely nothing to do with it, but have you tried clocking
you Celeron down to 300 again, just to check (very long shot, I know)

Maybe you should try to disable DMA support for your HD....

BTW, how much system resources do you have available ?

Win9x is a memory hog, and once you go past 64 MN of RAM, it start using
silly amounts of that for "caching"....

Sorry to be of so little help, but by shutting down everything in the
background you have covered the basics at least

If I remember this thread right, the guy was using IE5?  I found a checkbox
in the Advanced tab that allows/disallows automatic update check when
windows detects an internet connection.  I don't remember that beeing there
in IE4x or IE5.0, I  updated to IE5.1 and only then did I notice it.
But, that doesn't mean it wasn't there in IE 5.0 :)
And for that matter, check any app that might involve an auto update when an
internet conx is established, like Realplayer, IEx, etc.

whats wrong?

Thanks! I think that its either just a bug or because of windows.
I get no pauses at 800 x 600 but in 1024x768 I get one pause at the start of
the race. However even in 800x600 I do notice that the hard drive wil get
accessed at the start even though it doesnt cause a pause.
i have a feeling that maybe the PCI 128 suks too but Im  dunno.
PS I did try to go back down to 300 but the results were identical.
