GPL questions - I want to learn, then race online

by Jami » Thu, 18 Oct 2001 21:45:06

1. Where do I find it if I want to buy it?
2. Where would I find a central place for crucial downloads?
3. Does it support Force Feedback wheels?
4. I don't have 3dFx card.  Does it have Direct3D support?
5. How long until I can complete a race without spinning/crashing.
I'll turn
all the driving aids off.   I'm guessing 10-15 hours?  (Experience
wise: I can complete many laps in F1 2001 (PS2) at Indy, in sim mode,
without crashing or spinning.  About 1:20 per lap.  PB is 1:17.)

Thanks,
Jamie

The best thing to do would probably be to just check out the archives of
this group at:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=rec.autos.simulators
(if the above link wraps, make sure to copy and paste it into browser).

No idea, just try some local stores or online shops first..
Check out the links in the first column on the left site, then check
out all the other links :)

Yep, even more, it has the best ff in any current sim.
Yep. You need to download the d3d patch from www.papy.com for that.
Experience with other racing sims is quite irrelevant, the '67 cars
(no wings) are so much different to drive, in the beginning it can be
quite frustrating.. after 10-15 hours you can drive without spinning
too much I guess, but to get up to racing standards.. well it depends
heavily, some guys beat me online and then tell me 'hey this is a
great game, I bought it yesterday' and some people try it for years
now and still have trouble keeping the car on the road.
Like me :(

depends what country you're in! Try Amazon? It's in PCworld in the UK.
Loads of copies.

Isn't one really but there is the main forum at
http://www.legendscentral.com
The best carset is here
http://jfcarset.cjb.net/
Tracks are all over the place as are various new car and track cameras,
sounds, skins, graphic updates etc.

With the 1.2 patch, yes.

With the D3D patch, yes.

2 or 3 months.... at LEAST!
GPL is VERY hard. It'll take 10-15 hours to just do a lap without
spinning off somewhere.
I've had it for nearly 18 months and have got a (just) -ve GPL rank and
I still find it hard to do a 10 lap race at competitive speeds without
at least one spin.

1) Buy it for $19.90 at:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
2) www.theuspits.com
3) Best FF ever.  Must activate in core.ini file (you'll see as you read
about it)
4) D3D Patch works well.
5) Never ;-).  Real hard to drive but worth the effort and then some.  It
really depends on your experience, F1 2001 (PS2) is really not comparable
since it is MUCH easier to drive than the PC version which in turn is MUCH
easier to drive than GPL.

Here's my rating of the 3 games in terms of difficulty:
PS2 F1 2001 on Sim mode: 3/10
PC F1 2001 Sim mode no assists: 7/10
GPL no assists: 10/10

This is a *** sim, it won't be easy.

Have fun.
