Ok gents (and ladies)...since y'all are supposed computer "experts", I need
some advice on something...

Namely, which of these systems would you recommend (or not) from these
URL's?  I'm looking at a P4 Intel, specifically, to replace my dated (4.5yo)
P3...I'd like to run N2K3, Call of Duty, and AA:O - along with N3...:-)

With Windoze...

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Without Windoze...

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Or...should I take a printout of these to my local custom 'puter shop and
see if they can match any of these?

Looking to get a complete system for around $400 (min) to $600 (MAX)...

Why not save a small fortune and get a mobile AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+, a DFI
Infinity and  Thermalright SLK-800A  - all for peanuts and overclock it to
2.7 GHz ?

TOP-POSTER,

If I might answer,

Mainly because overclocking is a ***shoot for one.  & you about have to
twiddle and know how to not only tweak it up to that speed, but also know
how to troubleshoot any anomolies...  Most want it to just setup and run,
maybe for another 3 years.
2 nd too much variance in heat solutions, cases, fans, etc .

DJspeedy,
If you buy ANY p4 (2.533 Ghz or up machine) and put in/swap a good video
card (like the ATI ) or the geforce (both run in the range of 200-300
retail)  I thnk you would be "happy as a hampster with a new wheel"...
least I have been.

Well since I build em, my suggestion :get the specs you want and go to a
local custom shop, and get your own custom computer, they can ask a few
questions ,make a few suggestions and save you $$$

If you get a P4 processor, make sure that you get one that is running on an
800mhz bus, and that the motherboard supports hyperthreading.

I would also take a printout of what you're looking at to your local shops.
Worst case scenario they say no.

I agree with you JW..

but like you, I been in the "PC business" since the day Nascar came out.  I
know I spent hours, over the last several years, tweaking the low dollar
part, to run this game.  If I had just got stuff that worked, think how much
better driver I'd be by now  :)

I havent work on my own computer for years now, dang it is nice to come home
and just "Race" instead of chasing gremlins half the time.

I agree as well, it's nice to have a place you can go and just dump the
PC on the desk and tell them to ***y fix it when something goes ape,
that's what my customers tell me :D

It may cost you a few dollars more to have it built locally, or you may
even save a few dollars by not spending money on stuff you don't need,
but that way there's someone responsible for warranties and things like
that, local shops usually offer good service as well, and if you're not
comfy with troubleshooting and all that stuff, that's worth a few
dollars as well

Not to mention that you're supporting the local business :D

Think deeply before getting one of the new Prescott Proccessors as well.
I'm not terribly impressed, and from what I hear they run Hot as HELL!

If I were to build a machine today, I can't help but think it would be an
Athlon 64.

They don't. I'm fine with the machine I've got right now (2.4 P4C o/c to 3
Ghz on a 1 Ghz bus) and it isn't hotter then my previous 2200+

The "C" isn't a "Prescott" mate :-)

Goy is right. Prescott's are the just released processors with the "E"
Designation.

And it's a _very_ confusing product line at that.
