Mike,
I had the exact same problem with the Riva 128 on a Viper 330 AGP card.
I could get framerates in the fifties (P2/300) but the image was so bad
it makes the game unplayable, for me at least. It runs better on the
Orchid 3dfx card but I'm still not a happy camper. I'll be honest, I've
given up on CPR. Direct3D is a horrible, broken API, they keep piling on
more and more code trying to fix it. Microsoft would do well in this
case to just take their lumps and write a port to Glide. I have written
to Eric Straub on the CPR team in the early days and he said the Glide
patch was under consideration. If and when they dump D3D or at least
write a Glide patch, I'll fire it back up. I'm not holding my breath.
Microsoft will sell thousands of copies of this game and we in the
newsgroup are a very, very small informed minority. The fact they don't
care was shown by the departure of the team. What, they can't take the
flack for writing the crappiest piece of overblown code in a long time?
Grow up and face the music Bill, bite the bullet and dump Direct3D. The
game is still full of potential, but not in it's present state.
That said, F1RS is a real kick and actually runs pretty well right out
of the box. Pick up a copy of that, you won't even be thinking about CPR
for a long, long, time.
All the best, Mike Davis
