GPL Direct Input slower???

by Otto Mathek » Sat, 22 May 1999 04:00:00

I am running GPL with a Thrustmaster GP1 and homemade pedals (single
axis pedals - y1 axis, GP1 paddles no longer wired in).  When I use the
direct input selection for the joystick driver, my car is actually
slower - less power, less speed.  I notice that when calibrating in
direct input (when using GPL to calibrate) the y axis pointer is biased
a little to the brake side.  When using the generic driver selection, my
car has more power and is faster, but the steering is much more vague.
Also, the y axis pointer is steady when calibrated in generic but won't
settle down in direct input.  I have an old ensoniq vivo ISA soundcard
and am using the joystick port on that.  In both modes, I notice
intermittent stutters in the sound which correspond to loss of power,
but the overall effect is much worse in direct input, where the power
never reaches the same peak as in generic.  I have DirectX 6.1, but as
far as I can tell, the joystick drivers are the original OSR2 drivers.

This is a relatively new phenomenon, and I don't know what is causing it
- it seems unrelated to any changes intentionally made by me.  My system
has plenty of power (450) and I get good framerates with my single
Voodoo2.

I have tried the Thrustmaster pro panel - no difference.  I have been
playing with different Voodoo drivers, but this does not seem to have an
impact on this problem (now using the latest reference drivers with
George Smiley tweaks - thank you George!)

My lap times have gone to hell, and I am very frustrated.  Anybody got
any hints or tips on how I can get direct input to work right?  BTW, I
realize my throttle pot could be bad, put it is pretty new and I would
be surprised if it is bad.

Please help if you can.  TIA
