help- gp2 and null cable

by pwtho.. » Sun, 27 Apr 1997 04:00:00

I am trying to have a head to head competition with my buddy with a null
cable.  It works for a while, but sometimes it freezes or needs a
complete reboot.

The two PC's:
1. laptop running gp2 from dos
2. desktop running from Win95

Can you help?

Thanks in advance

I have two identical PC's that I have used for GP2 null modem racing,
and I believe what you are experiencing are just some of the bugs of
the multiplayer mode. I always get lockups and freezes which force a
reboot. Unfortunately, Microprose has never responded to my e-mails so
I doubt this will be fixed. My best advice is to keep your null modem
races short. I have never completed a full null modem race without
locking up.

Make sure both GP2 versions are originals, not edited with any utilities.
That should help.

No need for that: just be sure that on both computers GP2 is installed
exactly the same. That is: same graphic details, same carsets, same
driver names etc. We had the same problems, but after we installed
everything exactly the same, we didn't have any problems with linked
play. We race about two full races in one session: no problems!

Check your cable. It should be no longer then 10 meters. Also check for
electric devices wich may cause a interference on your cable. Another
way is to reduce the transfer speed, i.e. 9600 baud.
