spotter pit speed wrong

by John J Par » Wed, 18 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Hello,

I'm about five races into a champ. season and am at Darlington. I turned the
speedometer on for the first time heading out of pit row. The spotter tells
me 'pit speed is 55 mph keep it at 5500 rpm'. No problem, I've been using
him to guage my pit speed. However, at 5500 rpm I'm going only around 45
mph. I don't reach 55 mph until around 6000-6500 rpm. I have not changed the
gearing from the ace setup, only the suspension. This would explain why cars
have been pulling away from me on pit road. You might want to pop the
speedometer up on pit road and make sure the spotter isn't lying to you.

On a different note, I was greatly surprised that while I was leading at
Darlington (first race I've managed to do well in so far). Terry Labonte
moved high to pass me and the spotter started yelling 'go high go high'.
Cool. I didn't realize he would tell you where to go to block a car.

Also, if you are leading during a yellow flag, Move up and tap the pace car.
The spotters comments are worth it.

The spotter is very conservative about pit road RPMs. As you mentioned, the
speedometer is the only way to know for sure. I usually bring up the
speedometer in practice and jot down the RPMs so I know just how much
"headroom" I have.

I don't think he was telling you how to block. I suspect there was a car
with damage on the track in front of you on the low line.

Yep, there's at least 3 different messages. The first time, it was all I
could do to keep the car on the road, I was laughing so hard. <g>

The pit speed is encoded in several places in the program's data files.
I suspect you changed it in the track.txt file, but it's also encoded in
the AI lap files... Don't know off hand what the spotter looks at to
advise you on pit speeds.

I also suspect that he won't have you holding the engine under no load
at some insane RPM just to make some user-altered pit speed...

"When you've got a couple of hours you can tell me why you did that."

I got that one for going around the track clockwise.

Also, I changed the pit speed at Talladega to 200 & the spotter still
tells me to keep it at 7500.

You must have a really fast pit crew.
