because im an Insect. I fell off every 2nd lap from the track, so only have
to shift
down 3 gears instead of 4.
cya Andy
a brilliant effort i have to say from one who saw his first motor race
EVER there way back in 1978. My only slight quibble is that the AI
cars are way too slow - to explain - Formula 5000 cars - not quite as
fast as F1s- were able to lap in 56-57 seconds in 1970, and
Clarke/Hill etc are well behind that. Anyone know the simplest way to
modify the AI to make them faster ?
Thanks once more for a great track

You *read* readmes before jumping in the car? Wow - get on to Guinness,
someone.

Oh I LOVE how slow they are...in an AI race I look like the mut's nuts there
at the mo! ;-)
They need to be doing sub-50 second laps to be competitive. The fastest F1
lap of the (original) Castle Combe was something ridiculous like 40 seconds
(mind you, that was a somewhat newer F1 ;-)

Wrong. The outright lap record (which of course, following the
chicanes' introduction now stands as an all-time record) is 50.59
seconds, set by Nigel Greensall in a Tyrrell 023 on August 25th 1997.

.... in damp conditions. He was the class of the field that day. It was
amazing to see these cars so close, especially at tower where there is so
little runoff. You feel like you could reach out and touch them. They
mentioned in the commentary that they were testing before the meeting, and
in the dry had managed something along the lines of 43 seconds. It was a
few years ago now, so I can't remember the exact number. Obviously, this is
an unofficial record as it neither happened in a race nor qualifying.

I have not used the track too much so far but find Jack Brabham is
fastest with a 1:09 something. 1967 F1s trundling round Quarry at
35/40mph (as Parkes does) - c'mon guys !
I still maintain that somewhere around 55/56/57 secs would be a
reaonable time for a front-running car of that era in optimal
conditions round Combe.
I have a default set-up for GPL
Ian
I've been round there somewhat quicker than that in an XR2i! It's not that
sharp a turn, it's just long. The knack for Quarry is to take Folly wide so
you're on the right just before Avon Rise. If you complete your left turn
on the way up Avon Rise, then you can brake in a straight line (and not
spin) when the car goes light at the top of Avon Rise.
Indeed it would. The record for an F1 car of that era is about 55 seconds.

And I'd chosen to go to what turned out to be a stunningly boring
sportscar race at Donington instead. <sob>

Sorry, didn't mean to show you what you missed ;-)
Worrying how if I shut my eyes, I can still see and hear Nigel Greensall
shooting up Avon Rise in the distance at 180mph! Funny how you always
remember the things in the distance rather than the action right in front of
you?!
