Nascar Legends Tracks with N3??

by Jay » Mon, 08 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Are the tracks in Nascar Legends portable to N3?

In other words... Can I simply copy them from one "tracks" directory to the
other, then modify the calendar files to show them, and badda bing... badda
boom, I've got a whole extra set of tracks to run on?

Yes and no.  The tracks will work, but the cars will look wierd (wrong
colors).  The reason is because of the different palette alignments (or
something like that) that papy used on both games.

Someone posted a message stating they had a certain amount of success
when patching a track, but that trees and poles still looked strange.

That's all I know about it.

No, they are not, but here's what you do.  I've patched both Riverside for
N99 (until
I get a card that will do N3/NL better) and IMS for N99.

The palattes in NL are different than the standard Papy
palattes...presumably to ward
off hoards attempting to post them on the 'net for others to use...or
possibly to give a
different 'look and feel' to the tracks.

The only way to get them from one to the other (N3, NL, or N2/N99) is to do
these steps...

N3>N99 - you can copy it over, but the 3do groove will look funky.  Use
David Noonan's
3doedit to remove ALL of the 'groove' part of the 3do from the track.  Yep,
it's time cosuming.
Yep, you can't goof it up, or you'll have one HECK of a time getting it
back...or start over.
If you are using a 3do card that requires mi4s, you'll have to unpack it,
use WinMip to convert
all the mips to bmps, then use Paintshop Pro (www.jasc.com) to convert them
all to 4 bit images,
then use WinMip to convert them all back to mi4s.  Create a new .pck file to
add all the new mi4s,
then pack it back up.  Fun.

N99>N3 - You *should*, in most cases, be able to just copy it right to the
N3 tracks folder, add it
to the calendar, and race.  Use our Pitspatch N3 to fix the color problems
of the tracks.

NL<>anything - To get anything INTO NL, or get anything FROM NL, you'll have
to use Winmip to
convert all the mips and srbs to bmps.  Get a sunny.pcx from the sim that
you want the track to GO
to.  Use Paintshop Pro to create a palatte from that, then convert all the
.bmps to that new palatte.
Use the new sunny.pcx and cloudy.pcx from the new sim, and pack it all back
together.  Done.
If you are going from NL to N99, you'll again have to follow the steps above
to remove the groove.

All editors used to create these instructions are available from The
Pits...except Paintshop Pro.

Have fun...I did!

Cheers!

Nascar Legends Tracks with N3??

For the record (and according to Charlie Heath), it was some nefarious
plan on Papy's part to keep us from migrating tracks between sim.  The
reason the palette alignment is different is to support the more pastel-
crazy era.
