I prefer to drive (not multiplayer) using the arcade method of steering
vs the realistic method.  However, when I set up a championship season,
driving with the arcade method will not let me qualify for the race, ie
each track takes me straight to the race and the back of the pack.  Is
it supposed to be this way? If I want to qualify for races in a season
will I have to use the realistic steering method?

yes you do, and I think in the long run you will be happier.
As new sims come out, the "feel" of driving is getting better and
better.  If you start limiting your skills by choosing arcade options,
then each new title will be that much harder to come-to-grips-with.
I am an absolutely HORRIBLE sim driver, but I get the most sastifaction
when I turn off all the aids and "try" and compete without arcade help.
One question...Are you using some sort of gamepad for your driving?
A good wheel/pedal combo really can help.

You gotta race realistic if you want to do a championship season.  You
can still use the arcade view if that's what you want.
