Nascar road courses: impossible??

I was watching The glen today and I noticed that the crs looked
like they held the corners real well.

I jumped in my ofice chair and the car would just not the glen.
And if I drove a bad corner and over steered a little it would wish tail
uncontollably. The track is like a gym floor! and the grass is like ice!
When is saw rusty in the grass and it was really hard to turn
(really had to turn it hard).... the exact opposite on nasscar it spins
out if you just nudge it!

I have the same PROBS! My car will spin uncontolabley until I hit the
wall! If I have damage on FORGET IT! They better have them fixed in
NASCAR2! It's some kind of TRACTION problem! Oh well, we'll have to
wait and see about NASCAR2 I guesse!

I admit I suck on road courses, but you have to practice, practice and
practice to learn to drive them without spinning the car out. Are you using a
joystick or wheel/pedals? With the pedals, I have to vary the amount of
throttle I use on each turn. Just like the real thing, you need to have your
timing down, but of course it would be easier to navigate the course if you
could feel the car slowing down or the weight shifting, as if you were in your
own car.  It would be really convenient to put brake help on and floor it,
just steering thru the turns, but what challenge is that? Just be glad we
don't have to control a clutch pedal! :)

I am useing a Wheel/Pedal combo, that makes the car even LOOSER! Oh
well, I'll have to live with if for NOW!

Also,  something that could be similar.  Sometimes,  I'll hit the wall in ANY track,
and get "stuck" on it.  You'll have to slow to about 10 MPH if you expect to get off the
wall.  This is unrealistic,  it think this should be fixed.

>>>I was watching The glen today and I noticed that the cars looked

Could it be that most of the *real* race car drivers have been doing this for
a few years?  Or could it be because they can better correct because they can
actually feel the car starting to slide?   Nah.  Silly me.

Your setup and driving style needs work.

No, it's NOT a traction problem.  Like Kai, your setup and your driving style
needs work.

Setup hint - make the car favor right-hand turns (and give it some more
                     rear bias).

Driving hint - don't jam on the brakes and don't suddenly release them (same
                       goes for accelerator).

Listen to the skidding sounds the car makes too.  That's the best replacement
for not actually being able to feel the car breaking loose.

I can turn 119 mph laps at WG (with my race setup), and there are other people
kicking down low 120's.  Can you say "PRACTICE"?

Try turning toward the track, let off the throttle, and "tap" the brake.
..works for me.   I don't generally have to slow down that much to get off of the wall.

>>>[I can't get around Watkins Glen.]
>>[Neither can I]
>[Me too]

If you'd like to see what a little extra traction will do, run a few
test laps with multi.exe instead of nascar.exe.  You'll find that it's a
little easier to get around the road courses.  Even so, you should be about to
manage a 117 at Watkins Glen and a 90 at Sears Point.  If you have the track
and your braking points memorized, but you're still not getting around a road
course, email a RPY file of one of your laps and I'll try to figure out where
you are losing ground.  I'm working on a prototype of a NASCAR Racing "Lap
Analyzer," which will allow you to compare your lap with a reference lap
from a bird's eye view of the track.  It will be able to tell you if you are
missing a turn's braking window or apex.

I think that this is pretty realistic.  I've seen cars get stuck on
the outside wall and not be able to turn off because the right front wheel is
too damaged.

>Your setup and driving style needs work.

Definately.  Road course driving is much more like driving your real car
then you think.  If you wiggle the car under braking, you're gone.

I've noticed whenever people have fair amounts of difficulty at any sim
situation, they seem to blame the sim for being unrealistic. ;)

Actually, more rear bias seems to get the car harder to control under
braking and turn-in.   I run just about 50/50 at the Glen, I do have softer
rear shocks than up front.

definately.  Smoothness is EVERYTHING in driving, just like in real life.

you may be interested to know there is a sim series on the net that purely
races NASCARs on road courses converted from icr2.  ITCC does this to
simulate touringcars. (Have you seen NATCC?  awesome!)  If you're
interested check this out.  We just ran the first race at portland last
weekend and Glen's due this Sat.  goto

<lots-o-stuff snipped involving setup/driving hints at the glen>

Thanks, but no thanks.  I'm a NASCAR fan and that's all I really want to
drive (although I do have ICR2, more out of curiosity than anything else).  I
like the way races are done, the paintjobs, and the body styles.

What would make NASCAR Racing a really cool sim is if Papy provided different
shape models - one for the cars, one for trucks, and maybe a couple more for
nostalgic racing (car shapes from the 60's and 70's).  After they have that
figured out, a couple more road courses like Riverside (even though it no
longer exists) would be a good addition to the sim.

Other tracks I'd like to see added are Bakersfiled, Homestead, the new Dallas
track, and Las Vegas.

I like racing on road courses once in a while, but turnin' right  just ain't
natural.

Even if the RF is not damaged, it can be "wedged" up against the wall.
This will prevent you from turning left.  By slowing down you are
allowing the car to slide a little off the banking and away from the
wall.  Allowing you to turn left and pull away from the wall.
