Maybe the lappers in the low groove at dega were not there to block
but because it's where they should be. Do you really want the slow pokes
criss crossing the track say 3 or four times to satisfy the drivers who
cannot drive more than the preferred groove? Most accidents happen from
lappers who try to move out of 'the groove' for the fast guys. A low
groove predictable lapper is the best kind. Learn to appreciate it.

I disagree with this. :) I can pass any of the AI cars on the outside.
It is quite easy..just keep your line, stay put and they WILL give in
as you float up to the wall and they will fall back behind you.

: At Talladega, slow cars should be higher on the track. Since there is 3
: lines all the way around now there is no reason for them to block
: anyone,
: however I disagree with the "blocking days are over" statement.
I was talking about NCR1, but I still disagree. Lappers should be low in
the flat and should be expected to be. The reason is because the pits are
on the inside of the track. A well designed track will allow for an inside
flat for those coming up to speed and slowing to get to the pits. If
someone wants to get to the pits they should get low on turns 3 to 4 as they
make their approach. Not dive in from the top lane, this causes accidents.
In NCR1 this happened to be in the place where drivers wanted to be for
the fastest lap speeds, too bad for them and who ever they take out. If
they are good enough to be racing with real people than they should be
good enough to take a slightly different line to get around the pitters,
and yes, actually let up and loose time if need be, that's just clean racin.
Same goes for turns 1 & 2 where the slow pokes may also be just out of the
pits gaining speed. Luckily the new dega in NCR2 is better designed so
that the racing groove is out from the flat a bit more (at least as my
style dictates.) so this may not be as much of a problem.
Bottom line is that having the slow pokes streak across traffic to get in
to the pits or after getting out of the pits is not only silly but
harmful to other driver's ratings. Also since predictability is the most
important thing for a lapper to have, the inside lane is most logical
since there would be no times when the lapper would have to make the
desicion to do the track crossing when pitting or exiting the pits.
Ever come up on a lapper who is low or in the middle and appears to tend
low, causing you to go high, then the lapper jumps outside (just to get
out of the racing groove) right in front of you? It happens alot, and the
other way round as well. If the lapper was inside and stays there, there
are no desicions to make, no risks to take. Maybe you have to let up on
the gas to pass a little higher in a turn, but a least all survive.
This "blocking" idea seems to be getting confused with racing with
traffic. Only when you are clear on the sides and confident of the guy(s)
ahead of you do you expect to do dega with 'no lift'. I'm I bonkers for
thinking this way? Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems the
best way to keep accidents down.
Matt
You're not bonkers, just a smart racer. If you watch just about any race,
slow or damaged cars will run the low line around the track and the faster
cars will have to pass on the outside.
