GPL-P111-500 who'd have one!

I've been considering whether to buy a P111-500 system mainly so that I can
drive GPL online with higher res. and full options. However, I installed GPL in
on a P111-500 system in a showroom. This machine had a Monster 3DFX Voodoo2. I
was very dissapointed with the performance.

I own a P11-333/66bus motherboard/Creative Voodoo2 computer. I found that on
average the performance increase was around 10-20% (res. and options the same
for both machines).

eg.     Res 800 x 600
all graphic options on and slider bar in centre
1.      At the back of the grid at Silverstone

        P111-500/100FSB         P11-333/666Mhz bus

1.      27frames/sec            22frames/sec

Not much of an increase when on paper the P111-500 should be some 50% faster
than P11-333 in Mhz alone.

Considering all other software runs fine on my existing computer I don't think
it worth the expense for such a small increase in power.

Whether the bottleneck is the graphics card only the Voodoo 3-3000 will
demonstrate this, but I remember that the V2 was supposed to come into its own
on P11-350s(100FSB) and above. If this is so then why did it not show a genuine
marked increase over my P11-333 in the example above?

Any comments would be appreciated, people!

That is interesting. My celeron 450 with an 8meg thriller gets the same as the
PIII-500 you quoted, same res and options, 36 fps by the time you shift to 2nd
gear.
Maybe you should try overclocking you 333 a bit, gpl runs just about full blast  at
374.

I would if I could. My motherboard dosen't support speeds above 333

Most 66 motherboards run fine at 75 MHz bus speed. It would turn your 333
into a 375. If it doesn't work, install the latest bios revision for your
system and try again. If it still doesn't work, forget about it.

Unless the driver support the new Pentium III extensions then the difference will
not be dramatic. With the TNT for instance, the detonator drivers support the P#
instructions and the difference is quite visible.

GPL-P111-500 who'd have one!

I have a celeron 300A with an Abit jumperless motherboard.  This allows me to run
at three speeds: 300, 450, and 464.  I have a Stealth 220 for ICR2 and N2 and got a
voodoo2 for GPL.  I got lousy performance with the Voodoo until I downloaded a
patch for the Voodoo and GPL.  This patch and another file, I think, allowed my
tweak GPL and I get 34+ fps in 800 regardless of whether the processor is running
at 300, 450 or 464.  This leads me to conclude that you should be able get a Voodoo
for your 333 and once it is set up right, it should do fine.

IMHO you should put your money in Voodoo2 and patch GPL to run it.  If you want to
spend more, get a TNT2, I like my Voodoo, but I have heard that the Voodoo3 is not
really as big a leap in performance as TNT  to TNT2.  I know there are issues with
GPL and TNT, so you may want to research this.

I don't know about online racing performance, but it seems a 333 should be fast
enough.

Otto, was this a 3dfx patch or from the board manufacturer?

I got a P3-500 and a Voodoo3 card, I run GPL in 1024x768 (my monitor doesn't
have enough pixels to support a higher resolution, so what is the point in
going higher), I get constant 36fps ...

your mileage might vary....

I thought that GPL only supports up to 1024 x 768, so, running at
36fps, you're getting the best performance from GPL possible...

GPL seems to support up to 1600x1200 on my PC (only at 19fps at that
resolution though)

If you look at the back of the CD case of GPL, you'll see that it
claims the maximum resolution is 1024x723?
