Okay,

I know Nascar is intense and requires a lot of concentration, but
Geesh!  Why in N4 and N2002 (the only two I own and only two recent
driving games/sims I have tried) can you not look out your left and
right windows w/o having to switch views from the "cockpit"??  The
mirrors work to a certain extent, but you can't tell how close the guy
is next to you!

Wouldn't padlocking work too? :-)

Just curious.

You can...just set up the buttons you want to use in the Controls settings.

Have you tried hitting the z and x keys?  They let you look out to the left
and right, respectively, but I don't find it to be that great a help.  I
tend to rely more on my mirror, spotter, and sound of the car next to me and
get by decently well.  I always used to use the chase view and am now trying
to teach myself to race from the driver's seat.

Padlocking might help you wax a bogey's tail with miles of sky between
you, but NASCAR Racing is more like formation flying.  I rarely use
the left and right views, because they're too disorienting.  I think a
padlock or 3D***pit would be even worse.

Honestly, I think the only thing that would satisfy me is a
multi-monitor setup.  I want peripheral vision.  I want to "check my
six" (or at least my three and nine) without a disorienting view
switch.

The only thing I find them useful for is looking down the track after
you have been spun.  Even then, in 90% of the situations online,
oncoming cars will warp into existence so quickly it doesn't really
help.

PW, you'll eventually figure out how close other cars are to you, with
enough seat time.  Try running around with the AI at 70%.  Not to
race, just to see how close you can get to the other car w/o causing a
wreck.  Studying a replay from various angles after doing this for a
few laps might help too.  Concentrate on running as close as possible,
eventually, it will all become second nature.

I think padlocking would be potentially disastrous, in that folks have
a tendency to drive the car in the direction they are looking.  The
driver really should be looking at where they want the car to go -
most of the time.

If you know a car is inside you, instead of aiming for the normal
apex, aim a little farther outside on the track to give some room.
Or, if you know a car is outside you, aim more for the middle of the
track at turn exit, rather than up next to the wall.  It doesn't
really matter how close they are at any given moment, only that you
aren't taking a line that will eventually cause your paths to
intersect.  If you're looking at that car next to you, there's a good
chance you will just drive into it.

Simple, assign the look left and look right keys to buttons on your
controller. I have mine assigned to the buttons right under my thumbs on my
TSW, works great at superspeedways. The rest of the time I can pretty much
tell where guys are, I think that just comes with enough seat time. If a guy
is approaching me from the rear and disappears left or right, I ssume he is
still there until I see him emerge in the rear view or in front of me, keeps
me out of a lot of trouble by just yielding the position on the track until
I can see them again. Unless they made an idiotic move, there is plenty most
places. The preferred line is not the only line out there.
