gpl isn't unique.
If you want a well modelled driving sim physics engine, there's N4, N2002,
LFS, Racer, F12002/GTR, Viper Racing, and plenty more.
If you want a historic sim, there's Rally Trophy, SOS, and several SCGT and
F1200x mods.
If you want to have excellent online playability, there's N2002 and LFS
again, Quake3, UT2003 and loads of others.
imo gpl has just the right combination of features to appeal to a pretty
specific audience that want a well modelled, low grip racing car sim with
good online playability.
For me, the appeal of gpl is the poor grip, poor brakes and an excess of
power, combined with fast, flowing tracks without chicanes.
I'm not particularly nostalgic about the past, but the way I see it, modern
tracks are designed to be safe for the driver. When you're racing a sim,
safety doesn't matter, dangerous = fun, and I think Papyrus felt the same
way when they chose the 1967 Grand Prix season to simulate.
In real life, there's now absolutely no way I could ever push the limit
around Monaco, touch 240 mph at LeMans or do an 8 minute lap at the 'ring
because it would probably kill me. But I want to do it all the same.
I'd like another historic sim because my reactions just aren't quick enough
for a modern car sim to appeal to me. F12002 has huge amounts of grip and
minuscule braking distances. It's too easy to drive at 95%, but too
difficult for me to stay consistently on the limit.
60's touring cars, Lotus Cortina vs. Mini Cooper would be good, but you lose
out on power.
50's or 60's Sportscars might be better, Ferrari 250 GTOs vs. Aston Martin,
or pre-war for Bentley vs. Mercedes.
The tracks were fast and flowing, braking distances were huge so I could
actually outbrake someone, basically I want a sim where the G-Forces are
low.
Rallying could be good, but I'd want to race opponents on a circuit, side by
side through the corners.
I want to drive a car where just keeping it in a straight line at speed is
hard, and the circuit is more challenging than an oval, but I'm used to gpl
after 4 years so I want more power, and maybe a bit more grip in a
lightweight, chuckable car.
