I'm finding the default setups in Championship mode far too hard (car feels
like a brick). Are the default settings completely useless, or do I need to
beg someone to send me a few setups ? I'm lost when the I have to start
messing with bump and rebound etc..
Funnily enough, the Challenge mode seemed a lot easier than Championship.

I don't know what times you are aiming for, hence I am not sure whether
the setups are not good enough for your purposes or not.

Just for reference, I got the game last evening and did 6 runs at
Harwood so far (all using the default setup). The final two of them were
3:50's. I think that I could play some with the differential and weight
transfer to get the car to oversteer a little more under off-throttle,
but except for that I find the default setup quite good.

Tried it again, 3:46. I don't know whether that's good or not but the
car feels like fun :)

3:42.94 after a few more attempts. Car still feels real.

Yea now lets see you do a rally season where you gotta take care of your car
instead of hotlap

Why should I? :)

But seriously, you missed the point. redted was asking whether the
default setup is cr*p, and I replied that I think it is ok since with
only six attempts, I could get pretty good times out of it.

The only adjustments I've made (im too scared of the others) are the
springs. I stiffen them all around for France, and soften the front when its
muddy

No, you are...

You're used to imposing your will on, and actively balancing, an
"off-throttle-understeer-to-power-oversteer" car. As is Richard Burns,
obviously.

Other people prefer a generally more neutral to oversteering car, which they
can allow to work for them, instead of them working for the car.

I'm sure your method is faster in the long run -Michael Schumacher is a
7-time world champion after all-, but, at least in "simland", we should be
allowed to have the car handle the way *we* want.

I'll have a go at making a "proper" setup once I'm comfortable with the sim
(this may take in excess of 6 months).

Jan, you might want to start with the shocks. I tried plugging in
values similiar to what I used on N2003(I know it shouldn't work)
and got a much more controlled drive. I then started playing with
ride heights and spring rates. I don't pretend to be the fastest but
I have a great handling car thats fun to drive.
I found that the cars were rolling over far too easy, at too low a
speeds
on some of the courses. I dropped the ride heights down a couple of
inches and it did wonders.

Why shouldn't it? -both sims feature front engined, purpose built racing
cars. If the modelling in both sims is somewhat correct the same principles
should apply. The grip level is different and the variety of corners is
greater (hence a more "compromise" setup is needed), but otherwise the
effect of damper changes should be the same.

You're not wrong there...

I tried the tarmac Mont Blanc Rally today (default setup)... ye gods, no
wonder he got blown away by the likes of Panizzi and Loeb.

Retired on the 2nd stage... car simply undrivable.

Anyhow, thanks for the tips... I'll put them to good use!
