Okay, so the Playstation version features two types of gear boxes for the
cars: the automatic and what's referred to as the "semi-automatic" which
basically means that when the engine reaches a certain RPM decrease, it will
automatically shift to a lower (numeric) gear. My question: Is this a "real"
feature of F1 cars, or is this an attempt by EA to insult my driving
intelligence?

Every other F1 game I've played has "true" manual transmission.

Thanks,
Brian

I had heard that there was a system whereby the drivers would shift up
manually, then press a button and the car would downshift
automatically.

umm, I'm not 100% sure on this... But today durring qual on itv the guys came up
with a comment about blowing engines.  That blowing engines is not by bad
driving, as the revs (and gears?) are controled by electronics, and when an
engine blows it is totaly a mechanical problem.  Dunno if this'd go with this
problem...but you never know.  The modern f1 cars seam to drive them selves...
as most would say.. f1 is now 90% car, 10% driver.

The gearboxes in f1 aren't semi automatic as in they change themselves. The
electronics do however prevent changing into an inappropriate gear and over
revving the engine.

Then why the F did EA include the so-called "semi-automatic" feature in the
game? If it's a "sim" then this shouldn't be part of the game. Oh well, now
I'm REALLY looking forward to F1WGP on the Dreamcast...

Brian, I am not aware of any F1 sim that accurately simulates the current
day gearboxes. All of them, that I am aware of, simulate manual
shift and fully automatic. It sounds as is F1-2000 on the PSX is
no different, or did I miss something in the description from Ian?

The PSX verison has two modes, auto (does everything for you) and
semi-auto (auto clutch, manual shift) like most other games. In
semi-auto mode, gearchanges that would over- or under-rev the engine
are blocked.

O.K., that sounds pretty cool.
