Kali/kahn make the internet look like an IPX network, and could support
up to 8 drivers. However, as others have already stated, the warping
even with 2 players varies from acceptable to not, much of it based on
your situation, and how much "warp" you are willing to accept. Adding
other players and computer cars increases the demands on the system, and
make the connection worse. I have had some luck with up to 4 people,
but sometimes can't do we with just one other. After you have purchased
a license ($25 for Kali I think), you can play for free.
Hawaii is the public beta test for Nascar Racing Online. It allows many
drivers to race, and is free as far as Sierra/Papyrus is concerned.
However, you have to dial into the Boston area server, and are
responsible for any long distance charges you incur. It runs a modified
version of Nascar1. Interestingly enough, Hawaii generally gives
excellent connections (very little or no warping), even with 15-20 real
drivers or more. In my opinion, Papyrus has worked Hawaii to a point
where it is often better than a 2 player modem race! Those of us who
have run on Hawaii for awhile are generally spoiled, and find Kali/Kahn
a poor substitute.
Personally I have been running the some of the IVGA league, and we are
following the real Nascar schedule with about 13-17 racers. It really
is a blast to run against a good group of guys. For more info on
Hawaii, check it out on the Sierra web site.
