MTU/RWIN/TTL, etc.

Question:

I have a one-way cable modem - I believe VROC calls this a Hybrid
Analog/Digital Cable Modem.  I want to be able to host races for GPL so I
made some adjustments to my internet connection using info from here:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/#toc07

I'm running Windows98 and my ISP's MaxMTU is 1472 (the same as in the
example).  I set Automatic to 1472 in the following registry key based on
this documentation (see below)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net\0000\Ndi\
params\IPMTU\enum]
"1472"="Automatic"

I then downloded "PPP-Boost" and used it to set my TTL=32 and RWIN=4296
also per this documentation.  I wasn't sure what to do about MaxMTU in
PPP-Boost so I set it to default...  The other thing I did was uncheck
all bindings from my dial-up adapter in Networking.

Before my changes I was getting disconnects while hosting only 4 players
in GPL - but - I was able to download a 20MB file at 3.5Mbps.  I have yet
to host another race, but with the changes I just made, my download speed
has dropped drastically to about 350Kbps.  Any suggestions?

You may have more than one TCP/IP setup in your registry.  Also, if you
used the default of PPP-Boost, it may have reset the MaxMTU back to 576.

Try using the program iSpeed <http://www.hms.com/ispeed.htm>, you need
to determine which setting is tied to your cable modem setup.  Also
check out the following site
