NR03 Still Crashing-Suggestions Needed? HELP!

by TlgtrPr » Sat, 12 Jul 2003 23:04:31

System:

AMD 850
512 Ram
GF2 MX with 64meg ram  (drivers not that old 1-2 months at most)
Aopen Sound Card (on full accel)(fairly current drivers)
Win2K

Game lets me start a race and do 2-3 laps then either a blue screen and lockup
(says something about irq and dumping physical memory) or CTD.  Had some funny
graphics effects while doing the 2-3 laps before crash

Running 1024-768 some settings high some low.  During first install tried lower
resolution with same results.

Last nite I 'cleaned up windows' with Norton and (as suggested here) changed
'pagefiles' from 384 mg to 766 mg (not really sure what that is but it was set
at 384 and the machine/windows 'recomended' 766)  still crashed, but maybe I
needed to reboot to get the new setting to work(?)--will retry that tonite.

NR02, SCGT and Heat run fine.  Can't run any of the EA F1 games...loads track
and CTD.

Any suggestions appreciated.  (I know get a better machine-CPU upgrade enough
or CPU, GFX and Sound?..)..  If I left out any needed info just tell me what
you need....

Thanks in advance for any help

Sounds like a classic case of processor overheating.

OK, clarification please.  The processor is physically overheating...or it just
can't handle what I am asking it to do?  (Sorry not a hardware guy..)..

Any suggestions other that just dropping detail levels til it works?  (If that
would even work?)  Any idea if the pagefiles thing will help?

Yes, physically overheating. I have no idea where you are in the
world, but the chances are you are somewhere where the summer has
arrived and the ambient temperature has risen enough to make it
overheat.

See if there is motherboard monitoring software that came with your
motherboard drivers so you can see what the case and CPU temperatures
are. Or when you machine crahes next, when rebooting go into the BIOS
to see what the temperature is reported as.

You could try removing the lid temporarily from the PC to increase
airflow. If the PC becomes more stable then you need to invest in more
cooling for your PC.

In Wisconsin.  That is a thought but this is the only game that crashes the
machine...I have done 3 hour races in SCGT with no problems.  Is it possible
that it is the CPU *and* the game that are causing this?  Tonite or over the
week end I am going to try taking the detail levels down in some type of
organized manner to see if that helps.

Check to make sure you have no IRQ issues. Sounds like your sound card
and/or video card are sharing resources with other hardware.  Another thing
would to be try running with sound disabled and see if it locks up. You can
also try turning down the hardware acceleration for sound and graphics to
see if that helps.

The game pretty much wouldn't run at all til I turned the accell on the sound
all the way up.  Could turning the accell up have created an IRQ issue?  The
blue screen where it lock's did (I think) say something about IRQ...but I had
never had the problem before I turned up the acelleration.  Could I have
created this problem?

Will check IRQ's tonite also.  This stuff is not my forte' but can at least see
if the two have any in common or if there are any shared IRQ's.  That's what I
am looking for-correct?

PS--Thanks for the help-experiance has proven the NG's to be better than
Papy....

OK, tried the new pagefile limit and SCGT wouldn't run...may have IRQ
problem...have an 'expert' who will check it...tried dropping detail level...no
luck...

Get the lastest nvidia drivers. 43.45 works good for me. You didn't say what
version of DX you have, but make sure it is DX9a.
