Looks like you're going to have to upgrade to a Pentium to
play the demo at least. My Cyrix P166+ will not play the demo either
and it dies right where your 486 did -- when you click "drive".
The README.TXT file does hint at this (like you mentioned above)
saying that a Pentium is required to play the demo:
From the NASCAR 2 demo file "README.TXT":
Typically what this means is that the game designers
use two sets of calculations, one floating-point and one fixed-point.
On CPUs with a fast FPU (Pentium/Pentium Pro), the floating point
calculations will be faster, on 486s and Cyrix 6x86s, fixed point rules.
When NASCAR 2 starts up, it checks to see which CPU you have. If it's
a Pentium, then you get the floating point version, if it's not, you
have the fixed point version. I think the game Doom did this, too.
Unfortunately, it appears that the NASCAR 2 demo has only the floating
point version ready right now. I wouldn't despair if you're low on
cash and can't afford that shiny new Pentium, you'll probably just
have to wait for the real NASCAR 2 before you can play on a 486 or
a Cyrix 6x86. Bummer. The people at Papyrus aren't morons. They
know that a LOT of people out there still have 486 CPUs and I'm sure
that they will support them eventually.
Another possible explanation is that Papyrus is using Pentium
specific instructions, but I doubt it. I think that the Cyrix 6x86 is
instruction compatible with the Pentium, but still no NASCAR 2.
So now the real question is: Do I shell out the $800 for a
Pentium 200 CPU to drop in my motherboard? In addition to being able
to play the NASCAR demo, I'll be able to balance my checkbook several
nanoseconds faster. Nah! I'll stick with the Cyrix.
Maybe Adam could comment on the truthfulness of any of my
conjectures above. Adam?
