have the Sold Out version of GPL (in the UK that is) and windows XP Pro
without the service pack, and it tells me that the disc is invalid when i
try to install...
any ideas appreciated

My guess would be either your CD drive is toast or the GPL cd is no good.
GPL works fine on XP.

If you have more than one cd or dvd drive, try the other one.  Some drives have trouble with disks
when they are set as slave etc...

i thought i'd add that the sold out menu does come up, and it tells me that
the disc is invalid after it has done the sound test and asked me i want it
installed
