Well for me it was also about the drivers too. Right now F1 2001 has me
playing it for a couple of hours a night. The GF3 can not run this title
right, and if it can you have to be a driver wizard to figure out which ones
work best.

The 8500 on the other hand runs the game perfect with no problems at all. So
I chose the card that worked best for the game I play the most.

Have you tried the new Smoothvision drivers released today ? How's the
performance (and looks) in GPL, F1 2001 and N4 now ?

Ran some test with it last night it does works now, it's not as good as the
V5 FSAA but it is better then any other one out there. It doesn't completely
remove those damn jaggies but it does a decent job without adding blurring
or taking a big performance hit. As a matter of fact I only lost 1 fps in F1
2001 with 4xfsaa at 1280x1024 16bit and everything on full.

Do you currently own a Nvidia card? If you did then you wouldn't post the
above.

so which ones are the working good stable drivers?  I mean which ones can
I install, and forget...having compatiblity with F12001 AND older sims AND
current shooters?    And you are very right...I currently don't have a
Nvidia product...although there is one in the house....

There are many versions that are perfectly stable. Read any review on
current GF3 cards and/or Radeon 8500. Everyone mentions the poor state of
the Radeon drivers and many mention the good quality of the Nvidia drivers.
If you want the problem with no cars in F12001 and then  use 12.90 drivers.
I had no problems in any other games either. Anyway, the problem is the game
and not the drivers. I'm using a GF3 Ti 200 now and can't use the 12.90
drivers anymore because those drivers don't recognize GF3 Ti 200 because
they were released before that card was availalable. So I'm back to the
problem with no car in the mirriors in F12001, but I expect EA to fix it and
not Nvidia. If the R8500 had good drivers I would have bought one instead of
the GF3 Ti 200, I didn't base my purchase on brand loyalty, but rather which
card was going to work the best.

If it was the games fault how come all other video cards run it just fine
and going back driver releases on Nvidia products fixes the problem?

Actually it didn't for me. I tried 6.31,7.52,12.40,12.90,21.83,21.88,21.50
all to no improvment. I even tried different O/S as well.  Win2000 with
21.83 worked the best but inWin2000 I couldn't get split axis where i could
in ME. And yes all traces of the old drivers were removed via a reg edit or
a full blown format c and fresh O/S. Also before you ask yes it was a long
weekend. :)

Wow that's a lot of driver releases! I wish you could find a set that worked
for you because your missing out on a really good sim.

Yes and no. I am missing out on F12001 true, but in the process I found my
GPL cd rom that I put away right after buying it because of no D3D support.
I actually bought it the week it came out, but when I installed it and found
no D3D support for my new TNT card it was quickly uninstalled and thrown in
a drawer. I had pulled it out a few times since then, but for what ever
reason I never got into it. This time around however is different. I have
been staying up late every night, downloading anything I find for it (thank
goodness for cable!) and talking all my friends into firing it up. So I'm
missing out on one sim, but I 'found' another. :)

F1 2001 supposedly worked fine with the nVIDIA drivers that were
available when it went gold.  The drivers that were released after it
went gold were not compatible.  Hence it was a bad driver release.  I am
not currently using an nVIDIA card, and the reason is because that used
to be a constant problem with them.  New drivers to support a new card
or new game almost always broke one of the games I already had.  Haven't
had that problem with the Radeon (crossing fingers).

I just remember that that papyrus couldn't get the nvidia  mirrors to
work in GPL with the opengl patch...well they worked, but they really
impacted the framerate.   papyrus kept saying it was due to Nvidia's lousy
drivers....to this day I don't think there is a driver set that allows fast
framerates with opengl in GPL.  The D3d patch was a godsend for non-3dfxers.
(and YES Goy I caught your meaning)  :>
So to see similar issues still floating around 3 years later, doesn't give
me much hope that Nvidia can write drivers any better than ATI.

Well, how come every other game I have works fine and only F12001 has this
problem? Because ISI/EA didn't test the game properly. If you want to look
at shoddy drivers just try playing  Porsche Unleashed on an R8500. Or, why
do so many games perform poorly on the R8500 when the hardware is actually
superior to Nvidia's?
