Has anyone tried the Carmageddon demo yet?
It's kinda gory, but the cars feel real(although they're too fast) and
driving around in the city
is great. You can do cool donuts and great handbreak turns and when you
smash into something, the
car is properly damaged as well.
I can't wait until the real vesion is out.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could drive around in a realistic city
enviroment with traffic lights and other traffic. You could have a
race from one destination to another against some computer-controlled
cars and there would be lots of taxicabs and "sunday drivers" in your
way and if you drove through a red light , maybe a cop would chase after
you and you would have to change lanes all the time and drive on the
sidewalk, being careful NOT to hit pedestrians. Another game would be
you, in a policecar trying to catch criminals, and in a network/internet
game some people drove policecars while the others tried to get away.
The cars you drive would not be supercars but ordinary passanger cars
and trucks from around the world (where did you last see a game where
you could drive a Volvo???) with realistic car physics.
The city should represent a real city (maybe San Francisco with all the
hills)
and expansion set with more cars and cities could be released
afterwards.
Who knows, if it's realistic enough it could even be used in driving
schools...

Now, there's the idea...
Somebody, please make the game!!!

<sniped some stuff>

I think they should make a realistic city/world simulator.  Where you
can walk, drive, fly a plane or whatever to where ever.  Of course this
would require aproximately 4.6 kamuckingigabytes of data, but, I think
they could at least fit a resonable facsimile of a medium sized city on
a couple of CD-ROMs.

Imagine, drive to Chicago, fly to London, rent a 911, drive down to
Stone Henge, get out walk around and about the rocks.

Or how 'bout the Pyramids of Egypt.  Or what about . . . .

Really, I mean, shouldn't they be working on this 24 hrs a day?  Why is
ILM working on more dinos, when they have more important things to be
doing?

I had an idea similar to this a while ago.  I think one of the attractions
to it would be it would allow you to do things in your average car on your
average roads and highways that you'd never do in real life.

Find Road Rash 95! Tho' it's motorcycles, the player can kick & punch
fellow riders off course, duke it out with a cycle cop, and run down
pedestrians. Runs on "real" roads, not a course, city & country. Very
anti-social concept!

Does anybody remember Vette by Spec Holo?

I think it was put out in the late '80s with EGA graphics.

It was pretty close to what you described here.  Set in San Francisco,
even had cops that would issue you a ticket.

I concur - Road Rash is simply one of the best video games ever made,
any genre, any platform. I've yet to meet a single person who didn't
like it (including several people who don't normally like computer
games).

I remember Vette! It was the best! I didn't even have these fancy EGA
graphics, just b/w CGA but wow, I had a lot of fun with that game! I've
never been to San Franciso, but I'm sure I can find my way around there
immediately, just gimme a 'Vette... :)

version...

Yeah...  souvenirs...  It was a really great game for it's time.  But
the graphics are STUNTS type (I know what I mean if you have this game).
Polygons non-textured.  It was only on 2 floppy disks.  They're was a
Apple and a PC version.  You had 4 Corvette to choose (AFAIK the
sledgehammer was the best).  You could do road kills.  This was a cool
feature.  All around the city were citizens.  If you drove on them, them
would reappear at the back (in the helicopter view) like if they were
squiched !!!.  Like Wild E. Coyote .  If a Police car was going by, they
could chase you and arrest you.  If you were busted you had to choose
an  excuse like : Why feet was stuck on the pedal, or, Why wife is
having an emergency.  They were bankings so you could jump off like in
the old Steve McQueen movies in the SanFransisco streets.  You also had
the Golden gate bridge and many cool stuff (for this era)  A sequel
would be great!

Good race at the Brickyard,  (-o-)

Spectrum HoloByte made a game like this called "VETTE!" sometime in the
early, early 90's.  You drive your Corvette through San Francisco racing
against a Porsche 928s4, a Lamborghini Countach, a Ferrari Testarossa,
or a Ferrari F40.  It's an old game so the graphics are terrible, but
the city is pretty accurately mapped, complete with landmarks and street
names.  Aside from the ancient graphics, it's still a great game.

The controls sucked.  I still have the game in a box somewhere around
here. I have played better games and have played worse.  The joystick
calibration sucked and the mouse is to hard to control.  That left the
keyboard and that was OK, but still left a lot to be desired.

This was done in real life in Paris in the 1960's by a French
"existentialist" film maker (forgot his name).  He mounted a movie camera
on the front of his Ferrari and drove across the center of Paris at racing
speeds, using the sidewalk, running red lights, etc.  Since you can count
the shifts, you know that he is up to 5th gear at several points -- well
over 100 mph.  The movie is available on videotape, it is called,
"Rendezvous".
                        *** Highly Recommended ***

Lest anyone get any ideas, I suspect that the name is registered and
would have to be licensed before being used for a game.

Sorry this post is so late, my newsserver is behind about a week...
