Diamond 3D GOOD OR NOT?

Hi everyone

Can anyone tell me if the 'new' Diamond 3D videocard is really fast with
GP2?
I want to buy it but I need to know if it's worth it?

Thanks in advance,

Henk Emmelot

Diamond 3D GOOD OR NOT?

by SGreen » Wed, 04 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Henk

I've just upgraded my P133 machine to 32 meg, and installed the Diamond
Stealth 3D 2000, in the hope that I could run GP2 (and other games),
faster than the computer recommended 16.0 fps.

Unfortunatly it has made no differance that I can discern to the speed or
frame rate. The computer still recommends 16.0 fps, and when 'i've
increased this to 23+ the picture does seem slower.

On the positive side, the colours are more vivid, and I can now run my PC
in 24-bit true colour, and other 3D graphical games (Quake, TV, C&C, etc),
look and play a little better.

If anyone know how I can get my fps to increase, I would be very grateful.

Hope I've been some use.

It seems like the only way to increase the fps is to upgrade or
"overclock" your CPU. I myself have a 166 Mhz which I try to "overclock"
to 180. It gets "buggy" after 1/2 hour (overheat?) Comments or maybe
some help please!!
Even though I have a 166/180 CPU I still run only 16/17.2 fps and full
details. I feel the game ((movement and feeling) is best when occupancy
is below 85-90%.
Buy the way do you use the S3Vesa graphic card accelerator.
That would decrease your occupancy approx 8-10%.
If you don`t have it DL it from here:

The first thing to do it make sure that there is heat sink grease between
the fan and cpu.

If your motherboard supports multiple voltage settings you could also
try raising the voltage a step.  I don't whether this will help if your
problem is heat related - it may make the problem worse.

I assume you already tried adjusting the BIOS less aggressive settings.
This is the surest way to make overclocking work but you lose some of the
performance increase.

BTW, I've got a cyrix p150+ overclocked to 166+ that has worked perfectly
for over a month.

Hi Henk
I have this videocard and have satisfied
My videospeed is 488.
One of the higher values that I have seen here in the News.
Before I had the Stealth 3240, he was very slower, under 400.

Well don't know.  I could never get it to work in 800x600x256 mode.
Took it back and got a different card.

Hmmm... I have a card based on the S3 Trio 64V+ with 1Mb of DRAM, and
using S3SPDUP, I get a video speed of 157. This seems ridiculously low
when compared with some of your times above; so what am I doing wrong
(apart from having only 1Mb)? Will getting another 1Mb do any good, or
should I move up to a better card?

Where are you getting the video speed results from?
Maybe your using a different program to test the speed than the
original poster.
About the memory, I dont think having 2MB instead of 1MB would make
any difference in video speed for dos games. What it would do is allow
you to have use more colors in Windows and I think thats all.
Comparing video cards, I have a Tseng Labs W32p in my P166 and a
friend has a Diamond 3D 2000 in his P133. I can tell just by watching
"The Need for Speed" on his machine that it's a very quick video card.
Looks just as quick as my P166. Must be time for me to buy a new card
I think :)

That is way to low if youre using a Trio64v+. Getting another meg
should indeed help you, it seems most OEM versions of the Trio64v+
only work at full speed with 2 meg. This does not happen with the
Diamond version, but you pay for that... I know of people that get
(with 33mhz PCI bus) 4xx with trio64v+'s...

Unless the card layout is really bad, you should get much higher
results with that chipset. I get 356 on a P100 with a S3 Trio 64
(without V+).

Things to consider:

1. Slow processor. What kind of machine do you use?
2. Too little video memory.
3. I also use S3VBE20 by D. Meschede. Maybe this influences speed a
   little.
4. Do you have a PCI bus and card? What's the bus speed? On some older
P75 systems, the bus runs at a mere 25 MHz (as opposed to 33MHz on
   a current P100/P133/P166.)

From what I've read so far, cards with S3 Trio chipsets give very
handsome results with GP2. They definitely are a good budget decision
if you don't have a lot of spare money to shell out for a Matrox
(which is not much faster in GP2). I'd suggest you try upgrading to
2MB first, especially since this is a bad time for buying an expensive
video card, with the next generation of 3D cards to come out next
year.

The processor is the factor here. I have the S3 Trio 64 and these are
my experiences:

vidspeed = 171
with my brand new Pentium 133:
vidspeed = 496  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both using S3SPDUP.
