GPL online - did I miss something?

by Doug Schneide » Tue, 30 May 2000 04:00:00

I recently found the time to get back into some on-line GPL racing.  Did
a whack of practice laps first to get the feel again.  Joined a race at
Monza, posted a 1.29.12 and sat back, relatively happy.  Four***
drivers in the race, I end up 13th on the grid.  Mostly Eagles,
virtually all of them posting low 1.28s, pole sitter posts a 1.27.  Guy
behind me in a Lotus with a mid 1.29 is wondering WTF.  We race, I
thread through the usual turn 1 crap, pass a few cars.  Within about a
lap, I got Eagles blowing by me like I'm standing still.  The winner
posts fastest lap, a 1.26.  I'm asking in chat if this is normal these
days, you gotta run 1.27s just to be there, all I'm getting back is
"hehe, hehe".  I've only been gone a few months, so maybe some regulars
can tell me, is this normal?

No it's not normal.  29's will win some races at Monza.  28's are
pretty common.  27's are rare and I've only seen one 26.

jeez...and I won a race the other night with a 1.30.xx average. That sounds
like a pretty quick bunch of racers you fell in with<g>.

Hehe hehe.

Yeah, in some races you need a low 28 to be competive. If you look at
the Monza hotlaps, you'll find that a 1:27.80 will put you on a 85th
spot...

Guess it's because Monza is very popular, and now people are very
competive at it, it's even more popular. On other tracks however,
not much has changed.

I was in that race too. I sat LAST because I posted my PB (I've had GPL for
only about 3 months) of 1:30.3.  My god! I just won a race by driving
consistant 1:31's yesterday, and now I was being whooped. Well anyways, just
trying to keep up with the pace, I spun a few times, wore out my tires, and
then retired with suspension damage.

Thanks,
Alex
