Hi,

I just saw the CART 2002 schedule and was a little bit
irritated, due to the new canadien race in Montreal.

Isn't the F1 racing on circuit Gilles Villenuve next year?

I thought there was an agreement between CART & FIA not to
race on the same circuits. Am I wrong?

Yes you are. That agreement were dropp last year I think. CART can
race anywhere they want, but I think F1 get to choose first.

Jacques Villeneuve is suppose to run in the CART race at Montreal as well.
If that holds up is still a mystery.

Don't be disappointed, be happy! The CART race at Montreal should be
great, and F1 will be there next year as well. Win, win.

The agreement as I understand it is that CART will only race on oval
tracks outside of N America. Road/street/ovals/whatever inside N
America. Hence the two new ovals in UK and Germany. I'm not sure about
any agreement for the same circuit, but others say that it has been
abandoned.

What's wrong - you DON'T want CART and F1 to run on the same track?  Why not?

  Relax Joachim,
Both CART and F1 will be racing at JV.  You are not loosing a round of F1
to CART.  The CART track layout will most likely be modified somewhat, I
beleive they are adding a couple of chicanes to the track layout.  This will
prevent fans from comparing the two series and drawing direct conclusions as
to which is faster.

Rafe,

The prohibition on CART running only ovals, not road courses, outside the
U.S. was thanx to Bernie Ecclestone putting pressure on his stooge, Max
Mosely, son of the WW II fascist, and currently major domo of the FIA.  As
usual, Bernie was treading roughshod on legality, and some Euro commerce
commission shot him down.  Now CART is free to run road races anywhere in
the world they please...if they can just get their all-but-moribund act
together.

Dave,

I was under the impression that they were REMOVING a couple of chicanes, on
the theory that a) the CART cars don't handle well enuf to handle the
chicanes, or b) they're too slow to need them (take yer pick).  But
basically, yer right, they will run slightly different courses to avoid
direct comparisons.

I imagine if CART removes just one chicane they face the
threat of lapping the circuit slower than F1, despite an obviously faster
layout. I'm not sure if CART is concerned with such comparisons, though -
for sure they shouldn't be. Should CART go to any F1 venue, I hope they'd
make them slightly less Mickey-Mouse, rather than the opposite.

It's too bad  that has to done. It would be interesting to see how the two
series compare on a track like Montreal. I know the F1 cars would get around
quicker, but by how much? Adding more chicanes to that circuit is also a shame.

about the only place the CART cars would stand a chance would be the back
straight...their top end should pull them past an F1 car there...however,
the SUPER-DUPER brakes on an F1 car would guarentee that no CART car would
be close enough by the time they got to that last hairpin.

Why not wait and see what the actual configuration is before making a
judgement? It's all just rumor at this point...

BTW, the idea that Champ Cars can't handle chicanes or aren't fast enough
to need them is just ludicrous. Sure, F1 cars are quicker on road
courses, but the CART machines are no slouches.
