Best arcade style racing game at the moment...?

by Richard & Pernill » Sat, 10 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi everyone!

What I wonder is the question I put on the subject line. The most important
things for me in such a game is that it shall look good, and it should be
fun to play. Of course, it's also very important that the "feeling" is good.
I don't like games where it feels more like you're sliding an object left
and right over the screen rather than driving a car. Capability to play over
Internet is not of interest, maybe over modem, but neither of them is really
important to me.

I have checked the NFS3 demo out, and it looks good and maybe it's a fun
game. But what I don't like at all is the way the car reacts when you try to
steer it. But maybe this is only a problem in the demo, and not in the real
game?

Well, please give me some hints on what to buy!

Thanks in advance!

If you are looking for an arcade racer, NFS3 is certainly a good choice.  The
hot pursuit mode will keep you dodging cops for hours.  It's not the best game
out and it certainly has its shortcomings, but it's one of the best arcade sims
out there.  It's not a pure racing simulation game, though.  If you want a
realistic sim, go for Gran Pix Legends.

Test Drive 5 just went gold today. Not sure how good it is but may be
worth a look when it comes out.

Viper is the game you want I think. I looks quite good (not as good as
NFS3 tho) and has excellent handling in 3 different modes: arcade,
intermediate and sim. Check out the demo. Its great.

I just preordered my copy of Viper, Tribes and Halflife all for $75
from Sierra. You buy 2 games get the 3rd free. :)

The Steering in NFSIII is much better than the
original demo (30+mb d/l) however I have heard
that the 2nd demo (17mb) is much better than 1st.
But it is still an arcade racer. But I love it.

Not really arcade games but games that handle well and are easy to learn and
have fun in.

Toca and MTM2 (Nfs3 doesn't handle well at all)

OK

How about the steering? In the demo, it doesn't feel very good I think.

Now I've checked the Viper demo out, and I agree - very nice!

I have the MTM2 demo, and I like it very much. But I don't know if it's good
enough to spend your money on it.

Thanks for your tips!

If you like controlled sliding rally-style, I'd recommend Screamer Rally by
***/ Milestone. Or, if you don't have a 3dfx VoodooI or II, Screamer2 is
almost as good.

It takes some time to memorize the tracks, but after that it's pure FUN.
4-wheel sliding, sweeping the corners, controlling the car with throttle...
Car behavior can be adjusted by setting up the car to your liking
(understeer/oversteer), although this is not necessary.

Oh, and one more thing: use steering wheel & pedals, NOT keyboard.

- A wise remark -

PS. I've NFS's look good, but the car physics don't have oversteer (sliding
the rear) at all.

The things you mention (beeing able to slide and control the car using the
throttle for example) is exactly what I'm after, and I do have a 3dfx card.
And I also have a Formula One wheel from TM. So maybe Screamer Rally is the
game for me :)

Thanks!
