greatest racing game of all time. i'm floored.
actually, change "racing game" to "driving simulation."

better realism? you've got to be kidding.
: Please be more constructive next time, but seriously a PC port of this game

Hello,
: >greatest racing game of all time. i'm floored.
: >actually, change "racing game" to "driving simulation."
: How can the "greatest driving simulation ever" have no damage model
: and no***pit view?
True ... but the other features are way better than other games.
How many 'driving simulation' other there allows you to put a new
gear box in the car and the gear changing actually sounds different?
How many of them out there have Nissan Skyline GTR '91, R32, R33,
Nismo GTR, LeMans Edition GTR, and even the old 80s version there for
you to choose, and you can actually test them back to back to make
comparisions? (btw, all of them behave differently!)
There is a similar PS game (J/NTSC) called "Option Car battle" but
its 'entry level' driving simulator comepare to GT.
: It is the best game in its genre alright, but you
: are exaggerating.
It's definitely a huge step forward!
: Other games in the same genre are Need for Speed
: 1-3, TOCA, MTM2 and other arcade racing games with realistic elements
: in them. GT is better than any of them IMHO. But...
: GPL, F1RS and ICR2 are in a different genre (racing simulations),
: although the line between these two genres can be very hazy.
: If only GT had damage model, a***pit view, and maybe even a true 3D
: physics model like GPL (not all racing simulations have this though,
I actually think the physical model of the game is very realistic.
eg. The bumps before the entry to some corners unsettles the car a lot and
causes the rear brakes to lock up, (therefore losing control) this happens
to me quite a lot when I first started playing. Each car has its own
characteristic in terms the ability of turning in, stability of the car
under braking, riding over bumps/kerbs, oversteer/understeer when entering/
exiting corners etc. Unmodified cars have softer suspension and much
bigger 'roll', and you can actually feel that which car is lighter and which
is heavier.
Also ... different way to drive different cars ... obviously driving
the Subaru WRX/Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV is different from driving the
3000 GTO/Supra/NSX/Viper/R33 ...
: for example Nascar 2), then you would have an argument. Yes, I have
: played GT.
The replays are very cool as well, you can see the car rolling, it
really gives you the feeling of watching the real race ...
It would be nice if they add damage/weather/European cars into the
game ... well ... maybe for the next version ... :)
Have fun,

TVR is a European car maker, British in fact. They make only backbone
chassis, GRP body sports cars. Have a look at
http://www.tvr-eng.co.uk/index2.htm. I hope Gran Turismo has done the
Cerbera justice! Here's hoping there's a PC version in the works ...

Yes ... my mistake ... I was thinking of BMW, Merc, Opel, Porsche,
Ferrari, Alfa ... etc etc ...
It would be nice if they put the new Beatle in too ... :)

What is this obsession with a***pit view anyway? I find them very
unrealistic - I've never driven a street car fast that I could both
concentrate on driving fast and look at the instruments as well.
I much prefer the "full-screen" modes because that is generally what I
see when driving. (I quite like NFS3 (for all its faults) because I
can turn off all the displays (speed, revs, gear, place, lap) and just
have the world going by.)
Realism to me would be being able to press a button to look at the
instruments, but obscuring your view of what is happening outside the
car.
BTW, Gran Turismo arrived today and is sitting on my desk but I can't
play it until I get home. It's *very* tempting to develop some sort of
sickness which requires me to go home right now. :-)

Just got Gran Turismo yesterday and yes, it's pretty damn good.
I was disappointed they got the exhaust note of the MX5 a bit off.
I've wound mine out to the red-line enough to know that it sounds a
lot better than that.
On the other hand, while I don't know if it's accurate, I love the
sound of the Prelude VTEC engine after about 6k revs - it snarls!

The one thing I really liked about GT was the addition of a few
low-level used cars. I was especially happy to see the old RWD
Toyota Levin (Corolla) GT-S, as this was the car that I cut my
rallying and autocross teeth on, and I still have fond memories
of it. The first time I played GT, I didn't go straight for the
arcade mode to get an NSX or some other such ***. Nope, I
started with my old love, the Corolla, and slowly added some of
the TRD bits (same ones I bought for my rally car, actually)
and spent almost five hours just building up this "bottom of
the barrel" car. The mods had the appropriate effect on the
car's performance as well. Now, if only Sony Europe had managed
to slip a few Euro cars in before re-releasing it, I could have
had a go in my other old flame, a VW GTI - and if they managed to
model that wacky but loveable three-wheeled cornering style
of VWs (and other FWD cars with excessive rear roll stiffness)
then I would have really smiled.
