NASCAR Heat - installing mods?

by Luke Phillip » Thu, 12 Sep 2002 21:12:42

Erm, i have a question which im sure has a simple answer because there arnt
any readme files with the installs for the mods but.... once ive installed a
mod, how do i use it? :) And howcome it installs into two directories even
tho i specified for it to install into \games\NASCAR Heat. Is there a way
that i can safely move the Program Files\Hasbro\NASCAR Heat\ files to my
proper directories? Thanks in advance

For Heat you do NOT want to use anything but the default directory. This not
for the mods, but the basic game can get flaky if you install it somewhere
else.

As for the mods. Most, but not all, will have a shortcut in there add-on
folder that will launch the mod. Basically its just some command line
switches in the short cut. So if you get one that doesn't have one you can
make your own using on of the other as a guide.

First...    DON'T TRY AND USE A SEPARATE FOLDER!!!
It's a pain, but if your gonna be trying the mods, running Heat from the
default pathway is easiest method.  Uninstall your original Heat version and
then RE-install on the default paths THEN use the Pits multipatch to prep
for the mods.
Where-ever you try and install Heat, it will still create some files and
folders on the boot drive.  So let me be clear on this.  DO NOT RUN HEAT ON
A DIFFERNT DRIVE OR PARTITION.!!!  :)  DO NOT INSTALL HEAT IN CUSTOM
SUBFOLDERS!!!   Use the default pathways.
2nd.  Most of the mods have an icon-shortcut included.  For instance
the GTP mod has a file IN the GTP folder(mines called iimsa) called: GTP
Heat.  Double click on that, or use the Taskbar & start menu options to
create a new shortcut in the start menu's.   If you have a mod without a
shortcut, lemme know which one and I'll send ya a shortcut for it.  You just
have to edit one line in the properties of the shortcut  to point to the new
mod.

Usually, you'll have a shortcut icon that says something like (in the
Target:)

"C:\program files\hasbro interactive\nascar HEAT\NHeat.exe" -mod:ukdirt -
nosplash

It's important to check that the Exe is the NHeat.exe, not the "Nascar
Heat.exe" I am currently on Zippy patch, and I had to redo the shortcut
for  the vintage porsche mod (which needlessly uses a batch file with the
wrong exe version called in it), and the big truck mod.

Actually mine is on D: as that is my WinXP boot partition- Like everyone
has said, HEAT throws a complete wobbler if you try to install it
anywhere else than your boot (usually C:)- there may be a solution
somewhere in all the config files, but you'll get loads of errors about
paths not being found, etc. I don't think the complete "program files"
path is required (you could try c:\games\... or whatever).

most mods, I install to a temporary folder elsewhere first- they all just
take up a subfolder of the heat folder, and editing a shortcut to use
them takes five minutes (see above). So I just drag the folder across
when I'm sure it's all been extracted properly.

cheers
John.
