GPL was announced to be out on Oct. 9th, but I did not find it today.

BTW: A short GPL commercial is aired after some "Oldtimer" reports on
the German sports TV channel DSF, usually in the middle of the night

If you prefer English versions as I do, call Joysoft and order an import
version of GPL. Got mine last Friday.

I found it yesterday (Oct. 13th) at my local "Media Markt" (which had
it announced as "available Oct. 9th" in its latest flier. It became
available only yesterday, though - I kept checking once a day since
then. :)

There are some minor bugs in the German localization, but nothing
really grave. The worst part is the "4-wheel-drift" book: It's ably
translated, but sloppily edited, and there are some lines missing. The
worst "bug" I've found in the game itself so far is in the replay
screen: the indicator that shows time compression in the lower right
hand corner is labeled "Steifheit" (stiffness) ???? What have they
been thinking, I wonder?

The German version shares the UK versions "CD has to be in drive for
single player" protection. This is annoying, especially since you have
to completely restart the game after inserting the CD. I was about to
congratulate Sierra for not insisting on copy protection (apart from
the checksum thing that prevents copying the CD, which is ok since it
doesn't bother legitimate users), but this is the usual annoyance...

Apart from that, GPL is all I hoped for so far. I'm sure I'll find
*something* to complain about, but so far I haven't. :) The sim runs
perfectly on my iP250 w/ 32MB RAM and Monster 1.

I do 2.

They showed a "sold out " sign recently, but GPL seems to be available
again, for 10 DM less than the German version (which apparently has
some mistakes in the translation, as usual)

I hope this doesn't mean that GPL is selling well!  As this would
certainly upset some the doomsayers here in r.a.s. <G>.

That's not completely true. I usually make a copy of all games I buy. I
do this for two reasons.

1. If anything happens to the original cd I can still continue to play.
2. I always make a multiplayer copy to play over my network at home.

This is not illegal since it is copy for personal use.

lol (x2)

Image, this could mean that they did not only use GPL to TEST the engine
as all those nascar freaks were claiming. :-) I'd like to see GPL sell
more than nascar.

Quite legal. You may make one backup copy of media under most countries law

Actually this is illegal. Your license grants you to run and install on one
machine only at anny one time. You may not install and run multiple copies.

See above

This is of course a legitimate reason for making a copy. Yet, I still
have to see the first CD go bad, while I threw away countless old
floppy disks with corrupt data.

Hmmm, I'm afraid it is illegal. When you "buy" software, you usually
only buy the right to use this software on one machine at a time.
Unless the law in your country forbids such restrictions (which I
doubt), making a copy for other than archival reasons is illegal. But
then, most multiplayer games allow *joining* (as opposed to hosting)
an ongoing game without having the CD in the drive. If they don't,
it's not a problem in a private LAN anyway: start game on machine 1,
take out CD and bring it to machine 2, then start the game there.
That's what I always do - it's not as if *this* would be legal,
though. :)
