I haven't succeeded to do it, but I think there isn't any performance
inprovemend. At least with Need4speed I don't see the difference.

Get the new software. It pretty much completely replaces the old
program.

I tried that, too. And it doesn't work; however, I d'loaded the new 5.2
version and installed it under Win95. Then I copied the new statements
to my autoexec.dos (minus the quotes) and it the crowd now stay in
their seats when I'm doing hot laps at Michigan where before that would
run away whenever I topped 220 mph or so on the main straight.
Of course, there was no support for my card (MGA Storm) in UniVBE 5.1a,
so you may not see much of an improvement if your card is already supported.
