Hi,

A few days ago I noticed a thread about some program that clears out
your memory, so you'll get better performance from apps, especially
games and especially games which are processor hogs like racing sims.
And it saves doing th ctrl-alt-del finger dance before every race.
Hope I made that clear ;-)

Only thing is, I was in a rush because my flatmate and I were heading
away for a weekend of debauchery and silliness - so I didn't get the
link to it. If someone would be so kind as to let me know, i'd be
eternally grateful and promise to buy you a beer, should our paths
ever cross.

Cheers,

DG

Sorry, the early releases of Beer were ineffective at memory clearance.
Use only Beer 3.5 and above for efficient memory flushes.

Works best when application is used right after installation of Old
Granddad.

Dave, I have to disagree. I first downloaded beer 1.0 back in the 70's, and
I find that it has been very effective at clearing my memory, including
extended and cache.

I think that explains my frequent lockups.

I find Scotchv1.3 (J&B) works better.

Apparently you weren't using the German version ;)

If you're running Win98/se, there's really no need to use it (Win95
yes). There's a freebie that reclaims memory, called:

FreeMem (Standard Version 4.1x)

Very small util, go to Yahoo or Google and do a search for it, you'll
find it there.

The only reason the German early releases work so well (apart from the
Bavarian Purity module)  is that the installer  (1.0L model) is much larger
and must applied to the memory en masse or "gulp" as we say in technical
terms. This differs radically from the more usual "sip" and "slurp"
installers prevalent in the rest of the worlds  Beer 1.0 releases and
accounts for the greater effectiveness of the German version.

Well of course Beer 1.0 would work back in the '70's.  The limited memory
modules of the time were easily affected by all sorts of primitive programs
(like Disco 1.5!).  Fortuneately those old programs can still be utilized to
scrub the memory of things like the ***
Roll-over-in-the-morning-Who-are-you? virus. Nowadays (ah,Progress!)
stronger measures are called for.

Nope, I don't think Freemem is what Mr Goat wants, as you're correct, Matt:
Windows 95 (and up) handles memory as well as you'll probably get.

Enditall, as Ashley McConnell's post suggests, does what Disgruntled
requested.  Rather than repeatedly using Alt+Ctrl+Del, it is a configurable
one-key activated program for shutting down all the background stuff that
Windows runs while leaving only the essential Systray and Explorer.
Configurable in that you can add other programs to these two not to shut
down.

If friend Goat is running Windows 3.1, then he deserves to be disgruntled!

From my experience Win 98 onwards
you dont need these things

You only need more rams.
To find out if your game has hit the max,
run memlog just before you load your game
it will RECORD the memory usage
and out to .csv file
which you can view under excel.

Make note of the time you stand the game too
as it will let you know which area of the game that
has the most ram hits.
