Wheel to wheel racing is what makes any form of motor sports gain popularity
with a large fan base. It makes the competition much more exciting. A well
executed pass can be more exciting to than even the most spectacular crash.
You may be saying that drag racing has this also, but it doesn't. A drag racer
is only racing the clock and himself, if he happens to get there first he wins.
One car really doesn't effect the other. Wheel to wheel racing is probably
the most important aspect of a good racing sim. I would equate a computer
drag racing sim to having a Nascar sim that only let you do preseason testing.
Who wants to sit down in front of their computer and imagine they are sitting
at the line with John Force getting ready to kick his ass. Nobody that's who.
He is the most recognized character in drag racing and he is basically an
obnoxious, egotistical loud mouth. If it wasn't for Castrol commercials
nobody would know about him either. People just wouldn't identify with the
sport unless they were already involved. All the things you talked about
would just make the sim more complicated, not more enjoyable, and there would
be no payback in the end unless you were a drag racer. If you were a drag
racer, why would you be sitting at your computer when you could be working on
your car?
I don't want to make anyone mad here. I just don't want to see Papyrus use
it's valuable resources to do something that won't fly in the market place.
I don't see any long term value in a drag racing sim. I would like to see
them stay on their current path and continue to improve what they have. If
they find they have the technology and resources later on, maybe do a dirt or
a Trans-Am sim. The important thing is to remember where they came from. It
got them this far.

I don't normally like posts that say "me too", but...."me too" :) I
completely and utterly agree with this. The driving and spectacle of
drag racing could be something to behold, but one car doesn't have any
effect on the other, so in essence you are only racing the clock.
Given the choice of Papyrus spending time and resources on simulating
two F1 cars twitching their way into Tarzan corner trying to outbrake
each other from 200mph after several laps battle, or giving us a five
second thrill of balancing throttle against wheelspin before popping a
parachute, I'll be heading for Zandvoort and the wheel to wheel stuff.
Any sport which allows direct racing and dicing with competitors will be
more rewarding to more people, and dirt track, rallying, touring cars,
GT, Le Mans or any of a number of other sports have such potential. I
really hope someone provides a good drag sim for the fans, but not at
the expense of what would, in MY opinion, be a much better and more
accessible product.
Cheers!
John

Amen, Dana!! That's what's been getting me about Formula One the past few
years (up until this year). There was no wheel to wheel. The only
exciting wheel to wheel racing I can think of in from 93-95 was Hill and
Schumacher at either Silverstone or Hungaroring (correct me if I'm
wrong). It would thrill any race fan. But, I agree, just about the
time you get into the closeness of a drag race, the winning driver is
already on TV at the end of the strip! My dream simulator would be a
Formula Vee simulator with 60-65 FV cars trying to squeeze into Turn One
at Road Atlanta, Road America, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, and Lime Rock. Now
there is true wheel to wheel racing with hardly any technological
advantage! That's what racing, and racing sims, should be!

Hi!
Just couldnt keep my mouth shut! ;-)
I know who John Force is, and Im sitting another side of the world.
We sure dont have Castrol commercials with him either here
in Finland!
Okay, I admit, Im a big drag racing fan and been reading
National Dragster for years.... :-)
IMHO: Maybe it is not possible to make good gameplay out
of drag racing. I mean that maybe the game will kick some ass
if we have "virtual reality suit" with smells, shakes and
noises and horse kicks to your back and....
Well, you get the point?!?!
In a mean time, as we wait for that, happy racing to
all of you out there!
P.S. Sorry for my bad english...
