Thanks for the tips, I am still at 1:13 with the Lotus. I will see if I can
Make 2-3 seconds improvement during the weekend:-)

Hey guys

I'm still struggling with GPL....

How much practice does it take to get down to the sub 1:15's time ?

I reckon I've done around 80 hours so far with GPL?
But then again, I reckon I have spent around, oh? maybe between 250 to
300 hours with GP2?

Keep at it......    8-)

My personal best is still 1:10:04, and has been for the last two weeks
due to lack of seat time. It used to be 1:12:something until I asked
for driving instructions here, and got a lot of very helpful replies.
As I see it, the best pieces of general advice are:

- Use the Lotus. When I first installed the demo, I found the Lotus
undrivable and chose the Eagle, then the Brabham. Both are great for
getting a feel of the track. But once you have mastered the basics,
they don't have enough power for really quick laptimes. When I,
reluctantly, turned to the Lotus again, I was surprised that it is
actually easier to drive quickly than the other two cars once you know
approximately what you're doing. :)

- Go to one of the GPL sites (gpl.gamestats.com , I believe) and
download the hotlaps posted there. See what the really quick guys are
doing. I watched several replays a few times, both with animated
driver's arms (to see the steering input) and without (to see exactly
where they change gears). I found out that one can get through turns 6
and 7 a lot faster than I was doing. Once you know what is possible,
odds are you can replicate it for yourself.

(This is no big deal, but since I know it can only get better I'll
post it anyway.)
My best time for Watkins Glen is 1:17:28  on GP3 in the Repco-Brabham.
(my other GP times are slower..)
with a F-16 joystick, damage off (duh), help off

I've been driving the Eagle a lot lately and I could've sworn I've hit
a 1:16, but now it's on to the Lotus to turn in some real lap times to
keep up with you guys.
I've spent so many hours and GP2 and ICR2 that I know I can beat these
horrible times, it's just that the cars in GPL are so fun to drive.
This driving model Rocks!! I put up with sliding off every other lap
just because it feels 'fair. In GP2 (my favorite)  many times I'd hit
a spot of grass and instantly spin, but when one of my four wheels
locks up in GPL, or I drift a little too far out from leaning on the
throttle and I lose traction I'm no longer as mad or frustrated
because GPL feels so real.
Time to break down and buy a Thomas wheel and VooDoo2.

see ya

You *will* notice the difference in power? be gentle at first with that

Remember, speed = smooth

Hi Peter

I've done around 20 hours so far and I've just broken my record of
1.10.05 and got 1.09.60 in the Eagle (YES YES YES :)

And as far a GP goes, me and a couple mates raced every friday night
over 6 years (F1GP Amiga to GP2), thats about 5 hours worth each night,
minus say 4 fridays per year, for piss-ups'n'stuff. So that works out
too around 1440 hours. And our next race is in about 10 minutes, well
after pratice'n'stuff :)

Can anyone top that :)

And..... NEVER STOP!!!!!! :)

When I started GPL I found the G2 and GP1 cars extremely difficult.
Could rarely complete a lap! Was using a joystick and went thru all
kinds of jyrations trying to calibrate it to be less sensitive. Mike
Carver gave me some help and also suggested a wheel. I got a
Thrustmaster GP1 wheel and with it dropped 3 seconds almost right
away. Then I eliminated traction aid and dropped another second. By
this time I was in the 1:11 range. Then I dropped automatic shift and
gained more time. My best lap now is 1:08.98. I ordered a TSW and
hope that will chop another second, and when I smooth up some more and
drop antilock brakes, I have some hope of getting into the 1:06s.
Thanx to Mike Carver, and hope this helps others.

I finally got it up and running for more than a lap or two a week, today. I
will also post this slow time-GP3 Eagle   1:25:55. I will practice more
and(fingers crossed) get better. BTW thanks to all for the hints posted.
No helps.
Russ
the next lap I spun but still pulled a 1:29:xx
