Hey,

I just checked out this demo and was wondering what others thought of
it.

It crashed alot for me, like when I pressed Print Scrn and other
stuff. It looks good, but the car doesn't feel right. Braking is too
powerful and turning is a bit unresponsive. The game looks promising
if the bugs get fixed.

Well, I think they have got it pretty enough, but as for handling, THROW
IT OUT!!! It is hopeless!! The sliding around corners is dreadful, and
the whole graphic engine is rather static. ie. turn around and drive
backwards, and the camera view doesn't follow.  Also, I found when you
just touched an edge of the track, it would make some funny crunching
noises and you would lose a lot of speed. Fair enough if you crash, but
it leaves no margin for errors of ANY size.
Overall, if they made it FULLY 3D instead of moving static 2D,
(excepting the car which is pretty good), and made it handle BETTER, it
might be a winner. A lot of work needed though...
For a decent home-made rally game, check out the game that a student
made in Tiawan... maybe Silver Lightening could take a few handling tips
from this game :-)

I agree with everything you said. The car physics need a lot of work. I set the
suspension to full stiffness and the tires to full hardness, then set out to
Switzerland. That car should have been spinning in the snow like a top, but it
was quite the opposite case. When I would hit the sides of the road, the car
would just stop. The engine sound really drones, it got kind of annoying. The
pattern for the snow spraying off the tires didn't look good at all. I don't
know if the track were based on real ones, but they're all turns with no hills
or bumps, and that's kinda boring. Also there was a noise like a gun shot that
I couldn't identify. Slamming on the brakes always brought me to a smooth stop
no matter how I was driving or what the road surface was. The co-driver/
navigator's voice is a little unclear with the sound level set on Normal.

Despite the problems, I did have some fun playing with it. There's potential
for a winner here, but for now i'll stick to Big Red Racing.

For the most part you're right, but HEY, IT'S A BETA!  The whole point of them
releasing it was to get feedback on the game.

One thing I *like* about it is when you get the car up to speed, you can
launch it into oversteer before you get to the corner, and if you have
another opposite corner coming up, go to opposite lock to oversteer the
other way.  You can negotiate "esses" at top speed this way.  Kinda neat...

Erased it off my hard drive. Tried everything, but could not get it to
run. I will have to wait for the release version.

**In a response to a previous message, Michael says "

What I meant when I said that the graphic engine was not true 3d was
that it didn't have the same perspective changes as other sim games, eg.
weight shifts from accelerating and braking, sideways tilting on
corners, etc.
I guess thats what comes from playing Sega Rally too much... 8^)

Keep rallying..
