Nascar v1.20 + AWE32 == Lots of white noise whilst driving

by Stuart Boo » Wed, 15 Nov 1995 04:00:00

I've put up with this for months but I'm beginning to get a bit fed
up. I have an AWE32 card in my ASUS mo'bo'/ATI Mach64 video card P90
PC. I have a few problems with the AWE32, but generally games work
just fine. But Nascar drives with an underlying band of static, or
white noise. Like loud hissing, but somehow underneath the normal car
sounds. I've actually just recently replaced my fading speakers. I
tried some Sony's and now I've got some nice Yamaha's. I've also
plugged my AWE32 into my hifi. ALL suffer from this same noise
problem. Is this usual by any chance? I don't notice this in any other
games, be it System Shock, Command & Conquer, F1GP, Indycar, Apache
etc etc.

Stuart,

I have almost the identical setup as yourself and have just had
to learn to live with the "white" noise problem.  Everything that
I've tried hasn't seem to help it.  Somebody will inevitably
suggest that you start the sim using "Nascar -f -h".  However,
this only makes the car sounds appear like alternator noise that
you sometimes get on your car stereo as you accelerate.

If you come up with a solution, please pass it along.

Todd.

I too have this problem. Interestingly enough my system is
the exact same (ATI Mach 64, P90), but I have a SB-16 SCSI-II.
It is a Gateway system. I've put up with it, but that
background hissing sure is annoying. Anybody else know what's
going on here?

Same problem here, on a GW P590, ATI Mach 64, Ensoniq Soundscape.

I don't know....but after I routed the Sound Blaster to my stereo, I have
quite a bit of noise coming through the speakers.  I also don't have that
problem in other games.

BTW, I've got a SB Pro 16.

Many thanks for the tip. I gave this a go but it didn't make too much
difference in my case I'm afraid. My output gain was at 1 and for some
reason I had my treble at the lowest setting, but I tried your
settings.

Still, I'm glad to know it's not just me who suffers this problem.
ICR2 is fine though, and I do wonder how much time I'll be spending on
Nascar in the next few months.

I've seen this post up here for a while. I have an AWE in a P90 (Intel
Mdb) and don't get the same noise you guys are talking about. Are you
running you speakers through the Speaker out, or the Line out (for Line
out, you need powered speakers). I run mine through the Line out. Also,
have you played with how many cars are heard in the NASCAR setup? I run
8 heard, so this may not make a difference. Also try moving the card to
a different slot, sometimes this makes a difference with "cheap" power
supplies. I have my AWE one slot away from the P/S.

My old card was a PAS16 Pro, and that card gave a "ckackling" sound
when idleing in the pits. Is this the same noise your hearing?

Try this stuff, and let me know if it changes things.

I was going to post a similar question about NASCAR Racing and digital
sound.  I've had the same problem with both a Soundblaster Pro and a
Soundblaster 16.  The scratchy background noise picks up after you
exceed 50mph or so, and then just never quits.  So I just settle for
the lousy FM sound, since the white noise drives me crazy and also
drowns out the squeal of your tires, which at times can be important
to hear.

That I haven't tried. I believe I have mine in the speaker out.

Another good suggestion. I think in the past I did try this and it's
not something I ever set very high.

Definitely not a problem on my PC! I have a full tower case and my AWE
is in the very bottom slot with the PSU at the top of the case. My
video card is also in the highest PCI slot!

Crackling sounds like a good word, but I don't notice it in the pits,
its when I'm racing around the track that it's very noticeable.

Thanks for the tips though. Much appreciated.

Stuart.

That sound gets really annoying when a stereo amplifies it!  But I gotta use
FM sound, my computer just doesn't cut it in SVGA!

I'm running NASCAR v. 1.20 with my AWE-32 through my stereo and
experience no problems what so ever! The only explanations I can
think of are:

- I've got the latest version of the AWE-32. ( I doubt whether this
matters ).

- I've got a #9 Motion video card. More importantly, perhaps is that
it's situated at the opposite end of my tower system from the AWE-32.

On another note, it's come to my attention that many people love
to slag off the AWE-32 ( and SB products in general ). Well, I've
been very happy with mine. While it's pricey, with the newest games
it sounds great and I've had very few compatibility ( or driver )
problems with it. Just my 2p's worth....
