We just had the 2nd of 4 races televised in Australia with the 1966 to 1969
F1 cars. One of the Lotus 49B's boiled on the line then stripped 3rd gear
taking off. The other (Pete Lovely driving) led for most of the race, then
the Ferrari 312/69 passed a few laps from the end. Finally finishing 0.01s
infront of the Lotus.
There were also a couple of BRM's, a Lotus 32, a McLaren (driven by Sir Jack
Brabham), a Brabham (2.5 litre motor) and a few others.
Sir Jack had some trouble and pulled into the pits. Then he was out doing
some "adjustments" with a 3 foot long crowbar, but didn't rejoin.
The last race will be televised on tomorrow.

I WISH they had allowed us to listen to the cars screaming down the straights
instead of the b***commentary spoiling it.

And now for the 1million dollar question...

<drum roll>

"How did the closest car resembling a 1967 Formula 1 acted on the track ?
Was it sliding much as the cars in 1967 ? If not, was it due to the
modifications made after on those cars?"

The cars weren't sliding around ..  simply cos the drivers were in there 60's
and 70's  :-)

But the cars were good..   V12 BRM's and Ferraris..  wow.. sweet sound

Francois,
If you want to see 1967 cars sliding and spinning for real, watch 'Nine Days
in Summer' , particularly the Watkins glen sequences. You can see cars
losing grip and spinning just like in GPL. this convinced me of the realism
of the game. Drivers who take these cars out today never get anywhere near
the limit, otherwise we'd see a lot more accidents and deaths at historic
meetings

Yes I have the tape of this :)

I saw many slides at Mexico (it's when I saw that the half-tyres are not
hard like in GPL but actually just normal tyres that can flex when a car
pass on them).  But they always show a 3-4seconds portion, not a full race
with the camera zooming on 1 car for a full lap or so.  That's why I wanted
to know about that race.  Oh yes there's a nice drift of a car in N.D.I.S.
at the Ring and I guess it was exiting Ex M?hle (sp?).  I drooled :)

In Holland that's is available. Canal+ via satalite disc offers 6
different channels, with in car views and the data channel. I love to
have it, but allas, no satalite disc allowed where I live. :-(

I dont think they were really pushing that hard, didnt see any sliding. Very
good to watch though.

From what the drivers were saying and what I have read in the motorsport mags
the cars are as close to original as possible. The cars wern't sliding too much
but there seemed to be a few instances of severe understeer.

I don't think the drivers were really trying too hard. They were doing 1:32 laps
and the V8 touring cars were down to 1:26. After all, some of the cars are
insured for over $1,000,000 US and the leading 3 or 4 drivers were in their
early 70's.

Also I assume the tyres are not going to be circa 1967. but modern replica's
that inherit some of the extra grip and stability of 32 years of science.

I have a friend testing digital TV in England. He reckons you can select
which in car camera to view and which sound stream to listen too. You
can mosaic as many pictures as you want so you could watch the outside
view, a single camera and an incar camera all at once for instance.
Imagine watching the whole race from the incar camera of a Ferrari with
only the engine sound in Dolby Digital surround to listen to.......

Besides, the drivers pacemakers don't work well in high G forces.

The tyres that are used in the FIA-sanctioned Historic series are, I
believe, a recreation of the 1960s type and are produced by Avon.

The suspensions of these 1960s cars were designed around a hard compound  on
a bias construction with a lot smaller footprint than current tyres.

Mike Rodrigue

Isn't that what John Watson does CONSTANTLY?!? (Murray is too easy a shot.)

For Melbourne, I was amazed at the commentary proferred by the so-called
'experts'. If yellow journalism ever had a place in this world, it certainly
wouldn't be at a motorsport event! Especially at Irvine's first victory.
Gads!

If it weren't for the occasional (and rare) silence of the hams in which you
can hear the beautiful 10-cylinder music of the flats, I'd just as soon turn
the sound down.

I really like Bob Varsha. Even though he isn't a race driver (correct me if
I'm wrong) his commentary was always on the spot, and when you put him and
Derek Bell into the same booth, then you've got something to listen to! They
even respectfully shut up for the in-car views to enjoy the ride.

Naturally, he was sacked.

At least the video is un-butchered.

I last watched Champ Cars two years ago. Maybe three. In Surfer's Paradise,
there was roughly 1/3 of the screen devoted to the cars. the bottom third
was adverti***ts, and the left-hand third was pictures of the
man-in-the-pits as he wandered around fishing for sound bites. I didn't last
the whole race, and I haven't checked out a CART race since. Can anyone tell
me if they've changed their ways?
