N3 - no split axis?

by Arto Wik » Mon, 20 Dec 1999 04:00:00

As the subject asks: is it true that you cannot use separate axis for
acceleration and braking in Nascar 3?  I just bought the sim.

In Nascar 1999(!), GPL, Viper, SCRS and MGPRS2 I can use that. My wheel
is MSFF.

The control menu just doesn't see/hear anything, when I use the separeted
axis brake pedal!

And a lesser problem: I would like to use the buttons behind the wheel
for gears, but the same: no reaction in the control menu...

Assign keyboard keys to the buttons in the profiler.  Read the manuals that
come with the wheel, they explain how to use it correctly.

N3 - no split axis?

I've had no problem using separate axis for gas and brake using MSFF with
N3.

Here's how it's done:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Game Controllers
At this point you'll see your MSFF, highlight it and click Properties.
Choose the Settings Tab and then at the bottom of the page you'll see a
check box 'Map Forces from Y Axis to X Axis, check it.
Start up N3 and go into calibration and the second joystick should now be
your brake.

Hope it works for you, it worked for me.

You can use different axis, but the use of gas and brake at the same time is
not modeled in N3.

In NR99 you couldn't.  It let you use a different axis for the gas and
brake, but it wasn't modeled.

Many thanks! Even if the advice was not right to me - in my system this
checking did not seem to have any effect. But while trying your
advice, I understood that I have to _calibrate_ also the "Joystick 2".
After the calibration the "Set control" accepted also my brake pedal!

By the way, I feel a big improvement from N99 to N3: the force feedback
feels to be well done! And it really adds the feeling of driving.
And 1024x768 runs well in my PII350&Voodoo2.

To me (an European :-) watching oval racing has not been very
interesting. But driving them is another story... ;-)

You can but the software won't help much, not like GPL in which the separate
axis can be used to an advantage.  N3 is crude in comparison, you don't even
need to lift when changing gear ( Oh for a Patch!!!!). But it is probably
better to enable split axis in N3 than not.

Funny! Now when I can use different axis in both - thanks to r.a.s! - I
feel that something is modelled in it: for example I can do "doughnuts"
a'la Zanardi by breaking and accelerating the same time. And also in
driving the feel is different. Perhaps it is only my imagination? Are you
really sure that it is not modelled? And what does that actually mean?
No "trail braking"? I have the feel that those Nascar cars only are
so heavy compared to 67 F1 cars?

There's no difference, unless your under 30mph (or 25mph? One is N2 the
other N3 not sure which).  Under that speed you will go in a canned effect
of tyre spin, but that's all.  Per example, press both and turn. You will
spin on a dime, very funny.  You can have this with single-axis, you need to
press it fast twice.

But back to the point, it is not modeled.  With seperate axis, the only
thing it does is that it creates an imaginary axis using the two ones.  So
if you have 100% gas, and brake 100%, you will actually be 0% trottle / 0%
brake.  To add to the example, if you have 75% Gas and press 30% brake, you
will actually be 45% gas.  The only advantage you can get is that your
transfer between gas and brake (or vice-versa) can be faster.

Well, it's an example, because it's not actually full linear.

Many people misunderstand  the term trailbraking. It is simply the action of
braking while cornering.  You can do this in any type of controller, any
game.

Believe me when I say some Americans don't find oval racing interesting to
watch either.  LONG LIVE F1!! hehe

Yes, you can use separate axes for gas and brake.  I have a Nascar pro wheel
from thrustmaster and it has the switch for separate or combined.  I set it
to separate and configured it in control panel as a 3 axis 4 button
joystick.  Then calibrate the wheel twice, once as js1 and once as js2 the
gas will be J1-Y and brake J2-Y.

PS.  You still cannot trail brake is that's what you're getting at.
