Does anyone know how to modify the ICR2 software so that when on manual
transmission mode, you don't blow up the engine when you overrev?

That is kinda the idea of a manual transmission.  Not to
blow up the engine, but for the driver to shift BEFORE that
occurs.    My general recomendation is to try and never
use first after the start, it may lug some in the slowest
corners, but you gain more traction, less wheel spin exit-
ing tight corners and reduce the chance of over-revving.
The single best way to save the engine is to shift by sound,
learn where that engine note begins to rise and then shift.
good luck.

Why bother?  Just shift in the range of 11,500-12,500 rpms.  Learn what engine
sound those rpms make so you can shift without watching the tachometer
constantly.  Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I have no problem with the shifting but I am asking
for other reasons related to business opportunities.

I guess you could raise the 'rev limit' for the blowup to some ungodly
number like 30K...and maybe edit the motors to put out some more modern revs
(I think they're up to almost 14K now)

This may seem daffy, but I do.  At Laguna's last turn as well,
but I also will go DOWN to first if I need the extra braking effect
before the turn, but I try to shift to second before I exit the turn.
I am not the best sim driver around and spent many a tight
turn spinning donuts from applying the power either too early
or too quickly.  2nd gear helps to prevent that, and I only give
up a little time...alot less than even one spin per race.

ICR2 question

You can get a used 1st gen Rendition card pretty cheap, they
work the best with ICR2.  The 2nd gen cards, Diamond Stealth II S220
and Hercules Thriller, do run ICR2 very fast, but they have some
compatiblity issues that make it a real struggle to get ICR2
running in 3d mode, it can be done...but...  the Diamond is
almost free if you can still find a rebate for it..close out prices.
ICR2 was basically abandoned by Papyrus soon after it's
first patches were released.  Rendition did the 3d work for
Papyrus.  Papy took that work and used it as a tutorial for the
N2 3d.    ICR2 also came out before the Voodoo cards took
off, there never has been a 3dfx patch, and unless some private
user kludges something together, there won't be.  Same for
multiplayer networking.
You CAN access the higher res in 2d dos mode by starting the
sim with the -h switch.  i.e.
icr2.exe -h  (or whatever the executable is...)
yes the graphics are better,  are they worth buying a video
card with no other future?  I don't know,,but they do kick the
framerate way up as well.

I decided to check out ICR2 again after running across some new carsets
on the net. I was wondering if the only way to play ICR2 in hi-res was
still with a rendition card. I assume there are no 3dfx patches
anywhere. If rendition is the only option, are the graphics that much
better or comparable to N2 in 3dfx? What is a good rendition card and
can you pick them up cheap since they don't support many other games
anymore I imagine? Thanks for any help. Bob
