I'd say the recommended system should be the required one.  Based on past
history, I have NO confidence that a 233mhz system will run it with enough
detail to enjoy it.  In otherwords, I no longer trust the 'minimum' specs...

GP3 Official System Specs (including tcp/ip support)

I the light of this - perhaps I can ask for some advice..

I currently have a P2-350, with 64 Mb and a Voodoo3 2000
on a 440BX motherboard.

I can easily bring the RAM up to spec, but I don't know
about the processors.

Can I simply replace a P2 with a P3, or does the motherboard
need to be upgraded also? (i.e will a P3 operate on a slot 1
motherboard running at 100Mhz?)

Putting this another way - is it economic to upgrade a P2?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Steve

Yes Graeme, we'll definitely be able to do that online race.

Yes you most likely can upgrade your P2 to a P3. I've done it myself
recently. You'll probably have to update your bios and then you can just pop
in the P3.

Make sure your mobo can supply th ecorrect voltage to the CPU, or it will
be fried. To be sure, get an FCPGA chip (socket) and a socket->slot convertor
with build in voltage regulator. That should work. (a friend of mine did this to
a rev 1.02 Asus P2B, almost 2 years old that mobo).

Well thats exactly what minimum requirements are Eldred..... the minimum
specs you'll need to get the damn thing to run. It doesn't mean it'll run
well on those specs;-)

Does anyone have any specifics on the TCP/IP stuff?

Will GP3 have a dedicated server mode available?

I don't think the tcp/ip is what we are all assuming.  remember the early
specs were something like multi on a lan only with a max of 8 players.
(foggy memory sorry if the numbers are off)
Another fellow claimed GP3 was going to be shipped witha cripple
multiplayer component to satisfy the Lords of the FIA.  But that it would
take a private effort with a program similar to VROC would enable
multi-player...Don't get to e***d yet....wait til somebody gets a full
game for review.

The main thing you should be careful about is NOT to get a coppermine
chip,  as theres very few motherboards that will support it at the mo.

Somehow, I think most people(myself included) looked at the minimum as what you
need for an 'enjoyable'(or at least adequate) *** experience.  Anything else
is just gravy.  I got bit by that with GPL.  I had a 166 with 64MB ram AND a
Voodoo2 - it didn't run well enough on my 'minimum' system to even get around
the track... :(

Gee Eldrid, you're describing the system I just retired. I don't feel so bad about
my old lap times now...8^)

Uh, isn't that what we said?  Now that you have a new system, your lap times
WILL drop...  I wonder to what point, though.  I currently have a K6/3-400.  If
I get a 600mhz or higher, would it still help lower lap times?
