If you're talking about the 5th gear bump on the back straight, just
before the right-hander, then I found that lifting would cause the car
to come down nose first sometimes.  Just like it does over that bump at
Flugplatz at the Ring.

I find that I can't take the jump at Mosport at full speed because I'll
not give myself enough braking distance for the right-hander and always
overshoot so I actually lift just slightly as I approach the rise and
then boot it as I start to climb.  This seems to allow the car to be
much more stable through the air and results in it landing cleanly on
all 4 wheels.   This also works at Flugplatz too.  :)

I remember reading a comment made by Eddie Cheever after Gilles
Villenueves fatal accident at Zolder in 1982.  Talking about the
actual incident (Gilles clipping ochen Masses rear wheel and
cartwheeling through the air at 160mph and ending up out of the
car and up against the armco) Cheever said (this is how I
remember it) "I would have been shitting my pants, Gilles would
have been annoyed at ruining his (qualifying) lap".  I kinda
think this is maybe true.  I'm not saying Eddie Cheever wasn't a
very good driver but maybe he hit upon the differance between
the good and the great (and quite often dead).

Yes it true, but It was Rene Arnoux that said it I think (I could be wrong).
It is in the book "Villeneuve" by Gerry Donaldson. But they say that is what
Gilles would have been saying because he was on a flyer that lap!

I think Al was sincerely referring to the speed Gilles was doing on that
lap, not the nature of his accident.  Gilles was out for one last attempt on
Q tires, and still quite angry about the previous race's result (Pironi
passing him in an unsporting manner).  Gilles seemed especially determined
to get pole (this is all speculation, also in Donaldson's book) and was
lapping with more than his usual amount of determination and speed.

I think Pole position was too much for Gilles, if I remember he
was eighth and Pironi seventh at the time, all he wanted was to
get ahead of Pironi.  Whatever it was a terrible, terrible
tragedy and the first fatality I witnessed in my following of
F1, unfortunatly to one off my favourite drivers.

Zolder. They stopped running GPs at Mosport
about 5 years earlier.
