The TPTCC patch for N4 is what I've been hoping for since the concept of
a NASCAR Sim using the GPL physics was first mentioned.  I was so much
hoping that that was going to be N3.  oh well.  Now that N4 is out and it
feels so good I again can't wait for the TPTCC patch :-) Hope it comes out
before WSC though!

I don't know of any schedule they have, but I do know they plan to use
the N3 version
of the tptcc patch for online racing at least through the spring and most
likely a good part
of the summer...it will happen, but not  right away..

if that's the case, it should be overly easy to convert.  after all
isn't N3 just N2.5? ;-)  If they are using the N3 then I'll hold off on the
TPTCC patch till they do a N4 version.

Whether you are wrong or right, and in general I think you are right, it's
still no excuse for the sloppy recent batch of F1 titles.

Even if GP3, F1RC, F12K and F1CS2K were as good as is possible in terms of
their physics (which I doubt anyway), that doesn't excuse poor (slow) 3d
engines, graphical glitches, dreadful AI, poor replay systems, stupid
limited frame-rates, inaccurate track layouts, poor carshapes, inaccurate
data, awful sound and failure to use the latest hardware (both audio and
video).

I won't say which of those games suffers from which of those flaws, but
obviously not all those flaws are in all those games.

GPL clearly has more than just sim-friendly cars, it also has real quality
in every area.

While not disagreeing with your general thrust, let's not get all
"rose-tinted" about GPL.  Let's look at your parts of your "list of faults"
again:

Many, many people failed to get GPL to run satisfactorily on their machines
when it was launched.  The software 3D engine must be one of the slowest
ever written....

Can I say 36 fps?  There are good reasons for this, but if it is "wrong" in
GP3, then it must also be "wrong" in GPL...

GPL failed to support any 3d cards other than 3dfx and Rendition
out-of-the-box.  The OpenGL patch was troublesome for many, and the d3d
patch was released relatively recently.  Both are "unsupported".

Yes, GPL is probably one of the best racing sims ever written - but it's not
perfect!

You're right, of course. I'd love to test out my theory of sim-
friendliness on a GPL-class modern F1 game, could be a while longer
though. Maybe if Papyrus did one.

I'm also looking forward to the WSC demo, when that comes out. Will it
have the same impact on *** race simmers that the Watkins Glen GPL
demo had?

In one of my leagues, the discussion had turned to endurance GPL races.  Maybe
a 1000km race at the Ring, or something like that.  I may try an endurance race
on one of the other tracks.  Would anyone be up for a 4-hour race? <g>

screw 4 hours- lets wait for LeMans and go 24 hour with 2 or 3 drivers. just a
thought.

Maybe
One of my dreams is to be able to race one track with 3 or 4 drivers and
have true endurance racing...Being able to share a car...i.e.  driver 1 in
Finland
starts the race..drives for an hour or so and brings it into the pits....he
exits...Instant Messages a teammate in Australia who enters..takes the car
and zooms off.  Repeat as
necessary for 24 hours...(the crucial part would be finding two people in
Finland and Australia hehehe)

Well, since it was my idea, I am up for it.

What's really needed is a hack that lets cars park in pit lane for more than
a minute during the race. Oce that is done, we can run in teams with one car
parked while the other is moving, with teams possibly a continent apart in
reality. Or we need a hack that lets us extend the practice time window over
2 hours, but that race would be rather strange as only a replay analysis
(save frequently...) could determine total number of laps.

the way GPL works now, we need to run on a long track with teams sharing one
and the same physical computer (wheel, pedals, everything - get ot of the
car, let the other guy jump in)

Still possible, but much harder to find enough drivers for a full LD race
field (=>38 drivers in 19 locations unless you wear diapers and can run
multiple hours straight...)

park in your pit stall and you can leave to grab a drink or what ever
and your car will still be there when you get back.  I did this in a
Silverstone F3 GP event.  I went to take a pee break, have a quick
cigarette, and jumped back in to the race.  I was a few laps down but the
break was well worth it.  So, There you go :-)

If you park anywhere else you only have that minute or so before the car
is taken out of the race.  Be sure to park *in your stall* to be able to
continue later on.

NOW he tells me...  I could have used this at the Zandvoort GP... :(
Although, I thought I *did* pull into the pits.  Maybe I just stopped on pit
road...
