Anyone Playing Superbike2001?

I'm a cycle fan and wondered if anyone is playing SBK2001 on this group?

I just ran my first successful online game with it last night. It's quite
the game. When the realism is on full, it's pretty much like actual racing.
Good physics.

My only problem is that I can't get my Miscorosft USB controller to assign
the throttle slider to the Accelerate command. I've tried everything and
I've had this problem in other games, but once I calibrate the joystick in
those games, it worked. SBK2001 uses the calibration from the control panel
and that doesn't seem to work with this game even though the test lights
confirm it's working properly!

Any of you serious Sim-Guys have a clue? I have a couple reports into
Microsoft AND EA, but no word back yet.

Thanks
Ed

Yup,Nice sim/Game.PhotoRealistic(in setup)!!!!
Wow!!Plus all bikes and tracks to boot.

Even a k6 500 will run it well(with a Voodoo 4 card).

I just bought it last week.  I definitely need a different controller for it.
Using a wheel for a bike sim just doesn't cut it.  Are joysticks better(or even
a gamepad)?  If I could drive(ride) the thing better, I might try an online
race...

I find an FF stick works (needs a touch of centering spring)... but that's
about it. This is the only part where this sim really falls down... really
difficult to control. Can't bring myself to use a wheel either, it's just
all wrong.

Let me know when you're planning the online bit... we'll fall off repeatedly
together. ;-)

Joysticks work best on bike sims so you can lean into the turns. You
could fork out the dough for a dedicated bike controller too. There
is/was one available, but don't know the price.

I need to find a joystick that has the gas and brake buttons on the base, not
the stick itself.  I can't use the buttons on the stick, nor can I use the
foward axis for gas/brake.  I'm not that coordinated...
At one time, I had a great joystick - a Gravis Exterminator, I believe.  2
buttons on the base, one on the top of the joystick.  Simple, yet functional.
But, they don't even MAKE them anymore... :(

Try the Logitech Wingman 3D Digital. About 30 bucks, USB, good build
quality, and pretty comfortable and precise- and it has buttons on the base.

Can you use USB at the same time as a game port?  I'd hate to keep
re-configuring my system...

Considering how little I play bike sims, buying a dedicated controller wouldn't
be a good financial decision.<g>

Sure... the controller will just reside on the next available "ID". That is
to say that will work with SBK2001, some games require the controller to
reside on ID1, but the beauty is you can switch those around in the Game
Controllers applet, i.e. in software.

I just bought SB 2001 today. Pretty hard to stay on the bike without
help on. Problem with using buttons for speed and brakes is that it is
either on or off. I just tried it and it is best to use the default of
forward for gas and back for brakes. I know it is a bit awkward to
steer at the same time, but for bike sims it is the best you can do
unless you buy a dedicated bike controller. Problem with these bike
sims is that the only way to turn is by leaning, well a real bike you
can lean and turn the wheel so in the sim it makes sharp corners a
*** because you can't tunr the wheel. Just takes lots of practise I
guess. Sure wish there was a good F1 sim with this graphics engine.
It's sweet.

Then a stick will have to suffice. :-)

Your bike has a steering wheel??

Seriously, "steering" a motorbike, even at slow speeds is a bad habit
(unless you're manouvering while you have a foot down), for you might be
tempted to try it at speed as well, which might have disasterous results. If
you apply pure steering at speed the bike will actually go the other (wrong)
way, an effect called countersteering. The position of the handlebars or
clip-ons should follow naturally from leaning the bike at anything more than
walking pace.

Driving at slow speed in SBK2001 is a major pain, I agree. It requires
delicate control of both lean angle and throttle (not particularly good at
it myself), which is indeed hard when mapping these actions to the stick
axis. This is the most frustrating thing about bike sims... what comes so
naturally and easy on the real thing is very hard in the game. Even just
toodling along is really hard... then again, stuffing it on a real superbike
would cost real money and hurt real bad, so I can live with that.
