Online troubles. Help?

by schwab » Thu, 11 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Hello all,

I've finally gotten my 33.6 USR out of the ba***t and joined VROC.
It's really good!

But I have a few problems. The main one is I occasionally get screen
lockup, then the game continues as normal. I have a 233MMX o/ced to 261
and an 8MB Thriller, with three fans in the case and a CPU fan with
heatsink compound. (300a celeron sl32a and Bh6 are here, but I need $$
to get the RAM and a few other components before I finish building it)

I will be racing, then the screen stops... sound continues, however.
Then it unlocks and continues. The first time it happened, I was leading
by 5 seconds at Zandy. It locked, then I was DOWN by 3 seconds in
second! AGH! I caught him again, then just as I was contemplating a pass
with 2 laps left, WHAM it happened again. I finished second by 7
seconds. BTW, I also have detailed turned down so I get 36fps all the
time (except start).

Has anyone experienced this? What causes it? Is it a CPU lockup or an
online issue?

The other is fluctuating pings. I only join hostos with pings under 400.
But every so often while in the game, alt-l reveals a ping of 1.5 or 1.0
or 600, then a second or two later, it's back to 278. Is this normal
too? Or just a "bad Net" night, where Internet traffic is a little
nutty?

Thanks for your help! :-)

Can't help you here. I'm running a PII300/Voodoo2 & it's only happened
to me once since GPL came out (can't remember whether I was online at
the time or not)
Cable modems are notorious for this. The average web surfer will
probably never notice it, but cable's high packet loss can really affect
online *** where a steady stream of data is necessary.
Ususally, when I'm on VROC, I'll hit the "Refresh" button a few times
before I join a cable race just to see how much the ping fluctuates. A
lot of times you see an initial .167 or so the after a refresh it'll be
the dreaded .700+. People hosting with 33.6 or 56K tend to have very
consistant pings. The problem is regular modems can only host 3 or 4
people reliably & its much more fun to be in a race with 10 or 12 other
racers - if the connection holds out.

This is a sweeping generalization that does not apply to me.  I'm on the

slow webpage service ;-)
