Alot of play in my T2 wheel Help!!!!!!!!!!

by Scott Whit » Fri, 14 Nov 1997 04:00:00

I have a Thrustmaster T2 wheel and there seems to be alot of play in the
center position. Is this just the way they are? Does anyone have a fix for
this problem?
I am thinking of opening her up and doing some surgery to see if I can
figure it out myself so if you have any advice on what to do I would
appreciate it

I think he is referring to the wheel itself and not any particular game. =
I had the same problem with my T2 wheel and actually play with my T1 =
wheel hooked up to my T2 peddles. It is a shame to because I love the =
*** lined rim of the T2 wheel. Also it is unfortunate that the T2 and =
T1 wheels do not share the same steering shaft size.

Thanks

Centering precision is extremely important in sim racing, especially for
easing the car up to the wall before turn entry and for navigating in
tight traffic.  I tried several schemes to eliminate the sloppy centering
in my T2, but never got satisfactory results.  Replacing the bungee with
a stronger bungee helps slightly in the centering, but causes the pulleys
to bind up at high lock angles.  That translates into less smoothness
at the extremes.  I eventually came to the conclusion that the T2 was a
clever and economical design, but is ultimately limited in its precision,
even after careful tweaking.

Solutions?  Well, I eventually bought a TSW! :)

Need a little more info here... are you talking about mechanically
centering?  That is, the physical wheel itself?  Or, are you talking
about when driving it on the track? That is, it seems as if your car
"drifts" alot?  How long have you had the wheel and/or how much use has
it received?  Feel free to email me with the above, I might be able to
help...

Sharpen -up your knife and crack her open.  The T1 and I'm sure the T2 is the
same, have a bungiee cord which goes around a cam of sorts that has two lugs.
Could be the bungee is worn out, the luggs have loosened up or the staples
that hold a knot in the bungee have slipped.  None of these are to difficult
to repair.  If you replace the bungee try to get as close to the original size
as possible.  A heavier one might do more harm than good and a smaller one
will snap on you in turn 4 of Bristol ;)
Hope this helps...good luck.

After about 2-1/2 years of heavy use, my T1 started major similar
symptoms.  I called Thrustmaster's service department and they offered
to rebuild the unit for free.  It came back as good as new....

The steering pot in T2's tends to loosen up, so when you turn the wheel
the pot turns with it for a bit, then stops.  When you go the other way,
the pot moves back a little.  The end result is some play in the
steering input to the computer's game port.  This lack of precision is
very detrimental because it makes it impossible to place the car
precisely.

You can check to see if this is happening by recalibrating joystick 1's
X-axis, using a utility such as Thrustmaster's joystick test program.
Move the wheel back and forth.  If the pointer on the screen stays put
for a moment before starting to move after you change direction, this is
probably your problem.

I fixed this by wrapping safety wire around my steering pot, tightly
enough to keep it still.

Another poossible, though less likely, cause of play is not having the
steering wheel screwed tightly to the steering shaft.
