Best car for a GPL rookie ?

Try BRM first, Sluggish, "fat", but low torque and best test bed to learn setting up
the car. It is pretty forgiving (but you can still spin and crash). I definitely
suggest you start with "basic trainer" (aka F3) since you will find yourself trying
to "grab" control rather than driving if you jump with others (I secretly tried
"grand prix" Coventry last nite and whoa, it easily breaks all my current F3
records at Monza, ***, and great fun, hehe) I am now "promoted" to Coventry
and I have easily broken the 2'00" mark at Monza and improving.

You will wish to race in F3 if you are confident enough but I do not have the
steps so that allows you to race F3 right now. Try searching deja or may be some
experts here may help you with this one.

BTW, welcome aboard!

Regards,
Griffin, yet another newbie.

I reckon I'm probably alone on this but I find the Lotus the easiest
(and quickest). Its not that I'm fantastically good at the game (I
can't get faster than 1:07 on Watkins Glen), I just find the Lotus the
most intuitive to drive... flamers feel free...

All of them, you'll learn something new with each new car you try.
