N4 Controller For $30: Recommendations?

by John P. Wilso » Sat, 27 Oct 2001 14:38:09

Hey, all.

Thanks for the replies to my carset question.  I'm now running nice 2001
cars at Tally, workin' on my setup.  Now, a *real* n00b question.

I have exactly $30 to spend, so I can't act on recommendations to "get the
FFB" or to "sell your soul and get the Momo."

I'm thinking of a couple controllers for N4.  Right now, I'm using my dated
CH Gamestick 3D USB.  It's okay, but my hand gets tired (actually, I'm so
immersed by N4 that my arm tenses up and gets tired quickly).  I've got a
couple candidates here.  Any recommendations would be great.

- Logitech Rumble Pad (analog pad like a PS2 controller).
- Saitek R100 Sport Wheel (looks cheap, no USB...thoughts?)
- Logitech Formula GP (the non-FFB one, *may* be able to get it cheap, but
don't count on it)
- Some Other Joystick (lol)

I have good desk space available.  For reference, the last controllers I
used for racing were the NASCAR Charger (wheel and paddles) and the
UltraRacer PC (hand-held RC-type controller...wish I could find one).  I may
still have that NASCAR Charger at my parent's place...going there tomorrow.
</me crosses fingers in hope>

Thanks for the input!

N4 Controller For $30: Recommendations?

Sure you can.  Just save some more money.  Usually with game
controllers you get about what you pay for.  My problem with low-price
controllers is that they usually wear out relatively quickly compared
to something that, while more expensive, is usually built much more
substantially.  Higher-priced controllers usually work more precisely
too.

By the time you've bought and trashed several less expensive
controllers, you probably could have bought something else that was a
better controller to begin with for the same price or less.

I'm not saying break the bank, just I dont know of any $30 wheels that
are worth my $30.

HTH,
Gerald
