What is the nature of these new graphics? I thought Spa looked pretty
accurate, period wise...

Well, a lot of tracks are not even close, scenery wise, but that has a lot
to do with licensing. But Spa also suffers in another way: If I remember
this story correctly, Papy was not allowed to put the buildings of villages
etc. at the correct places because they didn't want the villages to be
recognized. (afraid for GPL tourists I think........). I don't remember the
source of this story but I think it was Mike Lescault (producer of GPL).

if you want to be a 'virtual gpl tourist' get the map image of spa from

http://www.teleport.com/~billtill/gplimages/spa.jpg

print it out, rotate for north, and then compare to the roads on:

http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_find?screen=ia-map-result&zoom_lev...

you can even spot the kink in masta straight!

Um... I find that hard to believe.  Remember they still race at Spa -
I visited the GP there in '97 (great race) so obviously, there's not a
problem with tourists - or rather, the region already gets a horde of
tourists for the modern racing so a few hundred extra for the '67 stuff
isn't going to make a lot of difference now.  (Besides which, most of
the houses simply aren't there any more).

Wer're talking about the "old" or "real" Spa here :-)

At the point where the modern, feminine F1 ballerina turns right off the
straight,
the real guys of the 60s were keeping it down!
I had the priveliege of running the Old Spa in a RV back in 1988, and it was
breathtaking. There still were kerbs in the Masta kink. And, yes, those
houses still were there!
Dunno about tourists, most of us 'GPL fanatics'
may like to go to Spa once, but I don't think we'll come all on the same day,
which would have made an impression at the local pub...

Any track that still retains Eau Rouge and Blanchimont can hardly be
called feminine - it's still the best track on the F1 calendar.

I visited Masta in the early 90's, but the track was/is not the same
as it was in 1967. Masta is still used as part of the public roads,
and the left/right kink has been tightened quite a lot and so isn't
the 170mph heart-stopper that it once was. Was it changed when you
were there, or still as the original?

People should maybe visit on the driving weekend - you can pay some
money and drive your car around the new "feminine" circuit for a few
hours! :-)

Cheers!

(Grin) Well, that's one way of looking at it.  The GPL track seems a
LOT easier to me than the modern one in F1RS or GP2.  (Which is not to
say that the 60s cars are easier, they aint - I just think you'd have a
lot more difficult a time if the modern track were in GPL).

Isn't Spa public road? When I visited the track 10 years ago I drove a
couple of laps around there. Ya just have to look out for oncoming traffic
and cops<g>

Hehehe, yeah me too! that's why I remember it so well. When I first read
that I thought: whatta bullocks! So there you go. I know 100% sure I read
this story but I don't know where and when.

Completely different track........

I think IF this story is true then they were afraid for speeding.

Well, yes - but I was thinking of the fear factor involved in those
days..imagine hitting a house at 120 MPH versus the "kittylitter" :-)
I enjoyed the track in GP2 - Spa is the greatest F1 circuit today, IMO.

Cheers,

Oh yeah, it still is my fav F1 track today!

It was changed - but it was easy to see the old "track" - maybe it has been filled
out/overgrown now.

LOL! I'd better bring something other than the 5-ton Rockwood camper, I guess!
